Hey everybody. My mom recently diagnosed stage IV bowel with liver metastasis and now in her bone. I’m unsure where in her bone. Has anyone had any experience with this or NED? She is yet to start treatment

  • Hi , sorry to hear about your mum. My mum was also diagnosed last year which stage 4 bowel cancer so I know how you're feeling. It's not easy.

I don't know anything about bone mets but quite a few posts appear if you search for them in the search bar. I presume the initial plan of action will be to chemo to start fighting the cancer back?

Thank you for your reply. I hope so. She has not had any treatment yet so I hope the plan is to just start chemo ASAP

  • Do you know when her chemo will start? Do you know how many mets she has in her liver and bones?

She has a appointment on the 18th to talk about a plan but now these bone mets have been discovered I’m not sure how the plan will change. She has innumerable on her liver and we’re unsure about her bone. They haven’t told us

  • That's good you've got an appointment very soon. I don't think the initial plan will change a huge amount, the plan is almost always to start with chemo to get things under control at stage 4. Once things have hopefully been controlled (and hopefully shrunk), they may well then move onto other treatment options such as radiotherapy. It looks like radiotherapy is a pretty common treatment for bone mets: https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/bone-cancer-secondary/radiotherapy-for-secondary-bone-cancer

It may be that the bone mets are killed off by chemo anyway if there aren't too many of them. They tend to plan in 3 month blocks and then re-evaluate after 3 months to work out the best plan of action for the following few months..

Thank you. See if the doctor would have said this I would have felt better about it. But they never seem to help. So thank you ever so much for that, it’s really helped.
