I have just had a phone call from my consultant and he told me the rectal cancer has spread to my liver and its basically terminal. He told me when I asked how long have I got it would be about 18 months to 2 years maximum.
It has not come as a shock at all as I was fairly sure it was spreading.
Next job is my bucket list and I will be thinking of things to put in it.
I might be given an opp to help with my diarrhoea problem in an attempt to improve my quality of life.
I hope to hear more next week about that.
I can't imagine how you must be feeling right now. TBH, I would be destroyed by getting such personal news over the phone. I would expect the respect of seeing my consultant face to face - to be confronted by such news.
You must have read on this site of all those - that have bowel cancer that has spread to liver, lungs, etc...& know that there's always a possibility of eradicating those mets. in various sites. Have you been told of those options/ possibilities? Yet also, there's always the opportunity of getting a second opinion from other hospitals. Are you considering exploring those alternatives?
I'm wishing you lots of good wishes

Sorry to hear that, Chromeplated, fingers crossed for next week. But is it worth getting a second opinion on whether there is anything to be done?

Hi Chromeplated Firstly I am sorry to hear you got this information today . However if you click on my user name you can read how my mum responded to treatment for a spread to her liver . I have also included a link at the top of my post to the treatment options for stage 4 bowel cancer which does actually have a few options .
Whilst bowel cancer that has spread is not often spoken in terms of cures it often is treatable which can in turn open up other options at times . My mum had a substantial spread to her liver but ended up getting surgery at a centre of excellence ,removing 73% of her liver . She has seen off a spread to her lung too .
Each person is individual in how they want to proceed and also in their response but it’s not entirely without hope . But it’s tough waiting to see if you can mount a response to treatment .
Doing some good things is always a great plan . Getting more information on the extent of the spread and the pathways open to you is good too . Quality of life is essential .
Take care ,
Court

Marianne26 Thanks for your feedback. I was offered a choice of face to face or a phone call. My wife and myself chose a telephone call as we have been travelling back and forth to hospitals for nearly a year. She has cancer as well and underwent four operations in her mouth carried out in Coventry. I drove there 13 times in all, and then with my radiology treatment where she came with me over five weeks every day we just wanted a rest. My wife has been discharged and is just being watched over the next few years.
That's perfectly understandable! You really have both been through so much - I wish you loads of best wishes xx

I admire your spirit in this situation and really feel for you both.
You have both have been through a terrible time and had the Covid restrictions to cope with.
What are you planning to cross off that list of yours?
Ann
Artsie, we went to Pembrokeshire for about thirty years where we stayed with friends. Due to my constant diarrhoea we have not been able to return although we speak to our friends every week on the phone. If my surgeon does carry out an operation to help with that then Pembrokeshire would be number one.
That sounds like a good plan.
Pembrokeshire is stunning. I used to take the yr 5s on school camp in the lifeboat house on the Gower Coast Port Eynon. We hired the whole youth hostel.
Its a little way from Pembrokeshire but wild and vast. Children used to exhausted by the time we got them back.
I hope you get your op quickly so you can spend some summer there.
Ann
