Hi Everyone. I was just wondering what people's advice is re what foods/drinks they should avoid once they have had their stoma bag fitted. I know there is advice out there re the subject but I would like to hear people's own personal experiences as they seem more "real". The same applies to what food/drink people think that may have helped them deal with a stoma bag.
Thanks
I think it depends on whether you have a colostomy or an iliostomy.
With an iliostomy you start with a blandish diet.I was told"as long as its white its ok!!!".then gradually add in more foods till you are eating pretty normally,as long as you chew well.
We probably all have our own personel nemesis but if something doesnt suit once you can always try a small portion later on.
My stoma "fred"doesnt like more than one glass of red wine for example but doesnt mind gin and tonic.mushrooms however appear as they went in.A bit of a shock when it first happens.
You just have to play it by ear and see
They do give you loads of leaflets about diet so lots of reading matter.

Hi Mr Mac
Like Kath says ileostomy/ colostomy are different. The ileo has quicker output and food doesn’t process in the bowel. I’m ileostomy and early days my go to was fish finger sandwiches with mayo salted butter on white bread. I hadn’t eaten that for decades and I really enjoyed it. I was high salt, sugar and carbs. Isotonic drinks. Now four month on I like Kath enjoy most things. I added to my food diary. Saying about shocks. When I got home I drank isotonic sports type drinks. On my first empty my output was GREEN I was shocked until I saw the blue isotonic drink on the side. Yes. Output yellow I added blue making green.

It is an anxious time but you sound prepared and the hospital makes sure you know how to deal with the stoma before you go home.plus send you with supplies to last until you get sorted with a supplier for all your bags etc.
If she keeps all her supplies in one easy to get at place it makes changing easier and only takes a few minutes.

Hello Mr Mac, for the first week I had breakfast of Rice Krispies with milk, then white bread toast with some jam. Sieved jam, you can buy without pips. For dinner I had mashed potatoes and carrots, with baked chicken. For dessert I had apple sauce and some custard. Also it’s a lot of rest and sleep. So that was my first 2 weeks. Then adding things in, and after a month I found I was eating more of a variety. Take good care. And I will be thinking of you both.
I’m Ileostomy and when I was told Salt, sugar and carbs it went against everything I thought was good for me. However Fish finger sandwiches on white, salted butter and mayo became my go to favourite. I still enjoy it now. I dropped a dress size and ate all the things I’d banned. Early days I’d have a little toast with butter or cereal. half sandwich lunch, a pudding with cream or custard high tea time or fresh cream cake. Then mashed mustard potato with butter very small amount of meat. Six weeks I introduced foods or spices daily if all went well I made sure I chewed everything to excess
Now I can eat a varied amount .Fishnchips or Chinese with glass of wine
The foods I avoid are blockers. Peanuts but I can eat peanut butter in fact that was great early days. There’s lists available however anything that’s hard like sweetcorn is a no no.
Good luck.
