Covid and operations

Hello, after 6 months of worry etc(ok that's a bit tame!) And initially told it needed to shrink before an op could be considered,.I went through radiotherapy which totally blasted it. I have had another MRI and sigmoidoscopy with biopsy which showed no malignancy but some damage to the rectum. The oncologist said she would speak to me again and discuss my options, however I have been booked into surgery next week for a temporary stoma. Thought I'd spend the days walking and eating healthy etc to prepare . I am very grateful to the surgeon who has done this so quickly but feel rather afraid.i had my pre surgery checks last week but since then I have had a bladder infection with antibiotics and now I have spent last few days in bed with what I believe to be Omicron. I have the exact same symptoms as my son who is 600 miles away. I couldn't get a PCR test because it's Christmas and there no post and no capacity at drive through anywhere near me.hipefully it will arrive tomorrow. Sorry for the long post but the key point is.....will I be fit enough for an operation now? Especially as it does not seem as if it's urgent. And who do I tell all this?

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum . That’s rotten to have to face this . I think the helpline staff 0808 808 0000 might be able to tell you . The other point of contact is the surgeons secretary. If you have their phone number /email they will pass it onto the surgeon . The hospitals have protocols and will be able to guide you . This is happening all the time so they may just delay it until the PCR test result is through although they do have more instant tests available in hospital .
Hope it’s not covid and everything goes smoothly for you .

    Take care ,
