I finished my treatment last week but feeling very low and tearful when i think i should be happy not really feeling great about christmas just think im going through the motions i have two lovely granddaughters which makes me think i should be more excited about christmas im worried ive got depression should i speak to my doctor

  • Hi Nana2020, I think what you are going through is pretty normal for some people. I assume it is chemo you have just finished and that is emotive on its own and the effects don't just stop. I was on Capox over Christmas 2019 which we spent with our daughter family and friends including two small children. I really didn't want to be involved.

You have probably been through the mill and won't feel like being excited. I suggest you think of yourself, try to relax and let the fact that you have finished the treatment sink in and as you start to get used to it you will feel better.  Is there anyone in the family that you can talk to  and tell them how you feel, I am sure they wont expect you to be the life and soul of the party!

If you need talk to someone else perhaps the nurses here would be better unless you have a particularly good relationship with your doctor.

I hope you resolve the problem and enjoy a relaxing Christmas and that the results of your treatment are positive for a Happy New Year

    With best wishes, John

  • Yes definitely speak to your Dr, I personally feel the mental health side of cancer is given scant regard, for me this was a major issue for quire a while after treatment finished

  • Hi . Yes it’s totally normal to feel like this. You’ve been through a lot and cancer is emotionally draining. I also felt scared that I was ‘on my own’ as there was no more hospital visits for the foreseeable future and it was a bit like my safety blanket had been taken away. A lot of people have found this paper helpful - if not right now then in a few weeks time?

  • Hi Karen Merry christmas!! I was very low at one point as Karen will testify...4 years on from stage 3a all clear and the pharmacist that helped me during chemo has asked me to be Godfather to her youngest!!

  • Hi . It does get easier over time doesn’t it? I’m waiting for my 5 year scan results but because I’ve moved health authorities they’re having to get my last scan back from huddersfield. Seems ridiculous that they can’t access it on a central system although the doctors told me that my paperwork was rejected by scunthorpe as they can only accept a maximum of 5 pages scanned in and mine was 100!
How lovely to be asked to be godfather. The best thing that came out of my cancer was my friendship with someone off the bcuk site - she’s become a close friend and we’ve laughed and cried our way through it all together - shes 5 years clear now too.

Merry Christmas to you too and all the best for a happy healthy 2022

    Karen x
