My younger sister is 47 and has been diagnosed with bowel cancer as well as liver which is secondary. My father on law has just received news that his life we had stopped working because of cancer and there is nothing more they can do. I know it’s not the same but I’m scared. My sister is so young and has lived a cleaner life than me. I don’t understand

    Liver sorry

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum . It is totally understandable that you are scared especially when you are already dealing with another health situation.

However bowel cancer spread to the liver is a bit more fortunate in terms of treatment options . Depending on the size and location of the tumours some people will be currently operable but go straight to chemo as the research indicated better long term outcomes in terms of surgical margins or reigning in micro satellite disease .

Some people use maintenance chemotherapy to treat it like a chronic condition . You will see people with various approaches which are tailored to suit their cell type etc and it is very individual in terms of response and that gives some hope too .

It takes time for the team to get a feel of how each individual responds but they will work at trying to gain stability and shrinkage. If you click on my user name you can see how my mum ‘s team treated her . Not without some unexpected obstacles but she got there in the end .

We are also here to support you . It’s not easy at times watching loved ones go through treatment.

    Take care ,

Thank you so much it’s a minefield and we are waiting in a treatment plan she has just had a pet scan as four or five lymph nodes were swollen this has helped so much Pray

  • Hi , sorry for all you are going through.  It is so unfair, I am the same age as your sister and had the same diagnosis last year, it came as a blow, I eat well and was doing home schooling and Joe Wicks every day at the time!

I was the healthiest person I knew!

However, a few months of chemo and a liver operation later I am doing very well.  I'm starting chemoradiation in January to attack the bowel tumour and the intention now is to cure me.

It's great that your sister leads a clean life, it's a great starting point for chemo.

Amazing things can be done so there is always hope.  One step at a time.x

Star74 thank you so much. It’s overwhelming and feels so bloody unfair. I’m so pleased you are doing well and it gives me great hope for my sister. Cancer really has got my whole family so hard at the moment with three of them suffering at different stages and that word feels like the worst but to hear your story gives hope thank you and merry Christmas x

  • It really is rubbish and I can't imagine how you are feeling with 3 family members diagnosed.  Are they all different cancers?

You will feel much better when a treatment plan is in place, when I was diagnosed it took a while to process and then I just wanted to crack on with it.

They are all lucky to have your support.  Please don't take on too much though, make time for yourself.  And, don't go near Google.

Keep us updated if you can.xx

Thanks star74 my father in law is in the final stages of prostate cancer his liver is failing and there is nothing more that can do for him. My sister has just been told she has caecal tumor with prominent nodal disease and a solitary liver metatastis we are not sure what it actually means yet as she is waiting in the pet scan results and my other father in law had bladder cancer but now appears to be getting  a lot of UTI’s so another concern.
