My husband started getting diarrhoea on his second week of CAPOX (second week of Cap tablets) and it hang really stopped, carried on through the week off. He’s been taking Loperamide daily. We’re starting the next cycle today and he’s still got the diarrhoea and we are waiting for the oncologist to discuss it. Just wondered what’s normal - is this what others experience? Pretty much on off diarrhoea during the whole cycle? He is worried about keeping hydrated as he also has an ileostomy.

  • Hi SarahSerena, when during the day is he taking loperamide and how much? As mentioned before it is best taken half an hour before food and, if needed before bedtime. I was taking two each time and the instructions say maximum of eight per day but your oncologist will probably confirm that you can take more. I have heard of people taking a lot more. Is there anything in his diet that isn't helping?

If he can't control it the oncologist may want to reduce the dose but over a longer period.  Is he having any other side effects?

PS I used to use a rehydration drink that helps replace the lost salts

Thank you! He’s been taking two in the morning and one or two every 4 hours to get to the maximum dose - it’s thickening output but it’s still very loose!

Oncologist has postponed chemo for a week and will reduce the dose on the next one. She said to not take more than 6/8 loperamide a day but we don’t know what to do if this doesn’t stop. Hopefully the week break will help him. He’s drinking electrolyte drinks as well as juice and water. Food wise nothing has changed in his diet but he’s trying to eat more bulky white bread, mash potato etc.

We are just hoping it’s not going to be like this all the time - we can’t go out for fear of needing a loo near by - and it smells awful! It really is thr gift that keeps on giving Grinning
