Hi diagnosed with cancer in caecum, had surgery ( right hemicolectomy ) 2 weeks ago tomorrow abs recovering well.
Had follow up today he told me tumour wasT3 however lymph nodes clear abs good margins, however he did say he saw a nodule which he removed and this contained cells.
he said 2 years ago this would not have warranted further treatment however guidelines changed and now it’s chemotherapy he said more of a bits and braces ( mop up ) approach. i feel both relieved and worried he says chemo can increase survival by 10-15%
still to see oncologist but right now stick between great news and some uncertainty.
many words, experiences, help would be greatly appreciated, whist does chemotherapy involve?
Hi L16 and congratulations on getting the tumour in the bin. No lymph nodes and clear margins is good news and, as your consultant says, any follow up chemo is the belt and braces. Like Kath I had Capox/xelox which is oxaliplatin by IV and capecitabine in tablet form. It’s often done over a 3 week cycle with IV, 13 days tablets then a week off but the oncologist will run through all this with you.
Chemo does have side effects but affects everybody differently so it’s hard to predict how you will feel however the nurses will monitor you closely and there are lots of pills and potions to help combat any side effects. It can be tough but it’s doable and worth giving a go so you know that you’ve thrown everything you can at the cancer.
Let us know when you know what you’ll be having and we can link you into our chemo top tips post
Take care

Hi L16. It will be my 5 year clear anniversary on Sunday! I was hoping my recent scan results would be back but they’re not but I had a clear colonoscopy in July and Mondays CEA was 1.5 so I’m hoping the scan will be clear.
My friend had undergone treatment for breast cancer and she told me to take everything I was offered treatment wise then I would have no regrets. I had a few problems after surgery and the oncologist said she wouldn’t be unduly worried if I wasn’t well enough for chemo but I gave it a go and even managed to carry on working part-time at my office job at the same time x
