Hi everyone
I have just had the great news that I will be having the reversal operation on the 22 December. However, remembering the pain that I was in after my operation due to constipation (caused, I guess, by the pain killer) i was wondering what the best course of action would be. Is there a strong pain killer that doesn't cause constipation? OR should i take the pain killers & also take a laxative? if so, is there a recommended laxative?
Ha! I did have to laugh as I am reading this in bed and evenings are extremely windy!! I think the gas is normal and part of the process of the body healing. As you probably know it's best to avoid gassy foods: fried foods, cabbage, brocolli, peas, carbonated drinks. Peppermint tea is calming. But otherwise I am not sure there is a magic solution to the wind problem, sorry!
It's a bit like a ballooI f you pull the stretch the ends together you get the noise but as it opens the sounds disappears. As you have a empty bowel with nothing else in it but air. It will stop as you start to move about
Remember to go to the toilet
no doubt that you will have a few mishaps and you'll miss your Stoma Bag
but you will get through this won't take long .

Wouldn’t worry too much about the first few weeks, it’s not too bad. Everyone has their own story, some have few issues some don’t.
Just so you are clear, despite Artsie's positivity I have to reiterate reversal is not a "small operation". I wish I had been forewarned before my reversal, just to be prepared. Expecting to be 100% fine by the New Year is giving you false hope. Everyone is different but from feedback on this forum I would say on average expect two months of "tummy troubles" before you should feel loads better. You may not be living it up at New Year but you will soon feel loads better - just take it nice and easy. Good luck!
Great advice! Totally agree with you and it is so comforting to hear that it is normal for it to get working again properly. Expectations can be crushing .., I left hospital after my ressection with the advice that all would be fine in a week! I was getting really quite upset until I came on here and realised it can take anything from 2 months to 2 years! I'm getting back to "normal" at two months so I feel I'm doing pretty well. Thanks again.
Thanks Alaine. there seems to be quite a wide spectrum ofpost op experience. no turkey for me this christmas, but that's not important
Off to Boots to buy incontinence pants!!
