My brother has been unwell since he left hospital about 10 days ago. He’d been in for conservative management of bowel obstruction. He spiked a temp while he was there and he grew some streptococcus in a blood culture. He had a few days of iv abx then went home and completed a 10 day course of abx. They could not pinpoint the source of this infection at the time. He’s been doing okay from the bowel perspective but he’s now missed his chemo second cycle for the past 2 weeks. He developed earache last week while he was still on the abx. Nurse practitioner has seen him and given him an abx/ steroid spray for a mild ear infection. The pains not really getting better, I have told him if it’s no better by tomorrow, he has to either go back to GP or go to ED.
The oncology nurse said ge would get his chemo next week if the infection cleared with spray but if not he will need more abx and will have to miss it again.
Hes really down about it because he really want to crack on with treatment. It’s very hard to see him not coping with these setbacks which I know can happen. I just hope things start to improve for him soon.
Hi Alaine
Thanks for the reassurance, I keep telling him in the grand scheme of things where he has been told he is on chemo indefinitely if it works, missing a cycle while he recovers from bowel obstruction and infection won’t make any difference. That’s easy for me to say if course, it’s not happening to me. He has very high hopes and expectations from the chemo so he is very down about not being able to have it. Hopefully his infection will be cleared soon and he can continue.
Hi Lozberry
I know at the start we got upset over interrupting the flow too . Unfortunately other things crept in but he is tolerating the actual chemo so that is a positive in the mix . By the end of the two years she was on it we were becoming quite bold and making sure it did not conflict with our holiday plans /Christmas etc . My mum got scan results the week before Christmas for about five years . Eventually we asked for a January appointment! It takes time not to get anxious about the delays and that is only reasonable when it’s all so new .
I would hear people saying “ managing stage 4 cancer is a marathon not a sprint . Eventually I realised it was a case of one foot firmly in front of the other the best way the patient can .
Hope the antibiotics are kicking in and doing their job . The ear infection sounds very sore .

Good morning Court,
Thanks for your reply, I am trying to keep the situation calm for him but if I’m being truthful my anxiety about it all is escalating. I am going to take him something nice to eat in a minute which he will probably turn his nose up at, then we will have a discussion about his inadequate fluid intake for the 10,00000th time. Oh well we will see how the day pans out with either going back to GP or an attendance at ED. I have just been for a long walk along the beach to clear my head, it does help so much.
Oh I remember those days well ! Only time I fell out with my mum during treatment .
“ She knew what her body needed “ and fluid was not one of them . You can imagine .
Was not trying to take her autonomy away just prevent a very real hospital admissions.
I told her I would have to hand her care over and she got out the bed and started to drink . Not one if my finer moments but needs must . I still think of that time .
Enjoy your walk . That looks amazing.

To my surprise he feels better this morning, his ear pain is manageable with just paracetamol, ibuprofen and some gentle heat. Phew I though we’d be spending the day in ED. He did turn his nose up at the food haha he’s so bloody predictable. We did have a conversation about his pathetic fluid intake. He has promised to start logging what he drinks daily on a fitness app. I honestly think he overestimates what he drinks. He has also promised to start filling in his symptom tracker on his oncology treatment record book so that he can try and predict when his bad days are and try and plan stuff around this. He has also promised to start looking at claiming benefits which he is not very keen on. He now has no income as a self employed person so he will need some money coming in. He says he will look into it next week. Until next week comes of course then he won’t do it…… god he’s hard work.
Macmillan has a benefits advisor if that helps 0808 808 0000.
I have two with very poor fluid intake and had to hit hard with the talk just yesterday. My dad has a kidney infection so I sympathise. They think they are great with a cup of tea now and again which they hardly drink !
So many more tools at their disposal now to track these things . Not much comes up on the forum but things like that sound really helpful.

My fitness pal is a great free app, there will be others too where you can track water, calories and exercise. Mind if he keeps his promise, I will be amazed. His focus next week will be being well enough to have chemo, so I have just used that as the driver for getting him to drink more. I have told him they won’t give it to him if he’s not properly hydrated. Hehe I don’t think that’s a lie, it I don’t even care if it is. I need him to do his bit, everyone is pulling out all the stops for him. I spent the day away from him yesterday, we don’t live in each other’s pockets ordinarily so the daily contact with him has been more than we are both used to. I think we are starting to get on each other’s nerves.
