Not feeling too good at the moment, just been diagnosed with rectal cancer and am just waiting for another scan to check a spot on the liver.
Ive not long got over prostate cancer and been given the all clear on that and this comes along.Im not feeling sorry for myself as I know there are a lot worse off than me but its come as another bombshell. My biggest worry is the treatment, because ive seen a few of my mates die after having chemo, being sick and feeling bad etc. not sure I can handle that?
Am I worrying needlessly?
thanks.
Hi slash1953
Welcome to the forum ! Sorry you have to join us but we are a friendly group and hopefully we can support you as you navigate through this !
Lots if people here have spots on their liver that get checked out .Kareno62 went through this too !
I am sorry to hear you have lost some friends from chemo ! Thankfully that is very rare in bowel cancer ! The things to remember they can stop chemo if it becomes intolerable, they can make adjustments to the dose ! My own mum had hers reduced and the difference was night and day with her !
Some people are not that badly affected and continue to work etc and others need the support of their team to address side effects but with their help they can get on top of it ! I think my mum was in the latter group but her team work with her !
You are definitely not worrying needlessly or feeling sorry for yourself . These issues are legitimate and reasonable ! With the right support you will be able to address your concerns !
Have you met up with an oncologist yet or is the information still being gather together ?
Take care .

Hi slash1953, it is pretty normal to worry but I would suggest that you wait for the outcome of any tests and when they lay out a plan to deal with the cancer, then you can research the treatment and possible side effects. Come back here to do so, not the internet.
As far as the possible chemo treatment that they may offer, they are do-able. I was diagnosed in early 2019, had five weeks of radiotherapy with chemo tablets, then surgery and then four rounds of mop up chemo, infusion and tablets. There were side effects but nothng too bad and the oncologist is alongside you all the way.
What sort of tretment did you have for the prostate?
All the best, John
Hi John, thanks for the reply. They said they are going to shrink it then operate but need to have a look at the spot on my liver.may not be connected? I had the prostate removed and doing well. PSA is unrecordable it so low!!
Hi slash1953 and a warm welcome from me too. As Court says I had something flag up on my liver and had to have an MRI - it was a harmless cyst called a hemangioma. The nurse told me these are very common and most people go through life never knowing that they have one.
Good to hear that you’ve been given the all clear from the prostate cancer - it doesn’t seem fair that you’ve now got this to deal with. My tumour was rectal and I had chemoradiotherapy to shrink it before surgery. The chemo is in tablet form and a mild dosage to enhance the effect of the radiotherapy. Any other chemo will be dependent on the post op histology so please try not to worry about that just yet - break your treatment into stages and cross each bridge when and if you get to it.
Chemo evolves all the time. There was a lady having chemo for breast cancer at the same time as me and saying how much more tolerable it was than when her husband had had it 10 years previously. It affects everybody differently - i was lucky and worked through mine - but there are lots of pills and potions to help you combat any side effects.
The next few months will be tough but bowel cancer is very treatable - I’m hopefully approaching my 5 year anniversary - so keep posting and we’ll be happy to help and support you through this
Take care

Hi slash1953 and I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling but hopefully the meeting today will help ease some of your worries once you have a treatment plan in place. It’s helpful to write down your questions and worries before you go. Please let us know how you get on?
Take care
