Cancer anxiety...

Hello, very briefly im male, late fifties. I'd consider my health to be good in many respects. I'm tall, slim, athletic. I think i do all the right things in terms of diet, excercise etc. I rarely drink alcohol and have never smoked. T

For a few years now i have suffered what i might best describe as cancer anxiety. My GP might call it health anxiety. The thing is that i have symptoms and therefore i investigate !

So what symptoms have i had ? For several years i have had GI disturbances which have been looked at and generally diagnosed as IBS. When i read about IBS and dont seem to have typical symptoms.

The symptoms i do have are general abdominal discomfort. This typically manifests itself as pain/discomfort on both sides of my abdomen just under both ribs.

About 18 months ago i had a full blood count inc PSA. All looked ok.

Investigations have shown that i have a small gallstone which is not problematic. A recent gastroscopy revealed nothing save for a small sliding hiatus hernia.

Earlier this year a stool sample test was done which only revealed H Pylori. I had triple therapy to eradicate it.

I noted that after that therapy my weight dipped and has been tracking about 1.5Kg lower since though remaining at that lower level and not reducing further.

I've never had any kind of BC screening as im not in scope of NHS Englands testing regime. They start at 60 i believe?

About 18 months ago i bought a FIT test kit from one of the on line providers. The result was 4ug/g (so zero)

recently i did another one. It showed 19ug/g. (abnormal). I appreciate we are talking micro amounts so i am not massively worried but i did speak to GP about it. GP asked why i sent for a test, symtoms etc.  GP initiated another FIT via pathology labs (ie not via the usual FIT route). Im awaiting a result.

I have been troubled by low back pain for over a year in the lumbar region. Physio is doing very little for it.  I dont have any of the specific symtoms for BC ie visible bloods etc etc.

I expect i am being overly anxious but part of me thinks, well if i dont look after my health, who will?

Thanks for reading my ramble

  • Hi  and welcome to the board. Are you being overly anxious? I don’t know. What I do know is that you know your own body better than anybody else and if something doesn’t feel right then you are doing the right thing by raising your concerns with your doctor. It’s good that your doctor is taking your concerns seriously and hopefully the results of the FIT will be back soon. I think the next stage will depend on the result so try and be patient, stay away from google and come back and let us know how you get on?

    Take care
