Hi

Is it normal practice to have a colonoscopy after you’ve been diagnosed with bowel cancer

also I have to stay in the night before , I’ve never had to before. Just wondered if anyone else has the same experience please

  • Hi Darcyolly

Im sorry you are going through this. This is a great place to find lots of information and support through.

Thought I’d just say Hello. I had a different path to my diagnosis, Bowel Screening picked up my sample and I had a phone call for a colonoscopy, cancer was put in the background when booking the procedure.
Maybe if you give more background information into your diagnosis there may be others that can help.

    with very best wishes

  • Hi

I am wondering if they need a tumour sample ! However not quite sure why you are staying in overnight but feel free to phone the department and ask why !

What issue took you into hospital in the first place ?

    Take care ,

    Hi

I went into hospital because of back pain.
not terribly bad . But as I’d been constipated for a long time . I thought I might have a blocked bowel . I should add it’s not unusual for me to suffer with constipation . I have hashimoto’s and can be the norm.
I’m so confused today. I was told when they phoned I was going in for a colonoscopy tomorrow. But today I received paperwork for an gastroscope

I’ve been trying for hours to get through to the department, consultant secretary, admissions. nobody is picking up the phone s

i don’t know what to do

Depends how they diagnised you. I was diagnosed with the camera, so it came first. But they took a sample. Maybe that's their plan. Email your surgeon's assistant, I do all the time and get answers back. Or used to.

Staying over may depend on time of day for the camera, I had the option to stay. And you'll need recovery time if you have a sedative, again depending on your medical history you may need longer to recover from it, eg: you can't drive after.

Good luck, best advice is definately to ask your surgeon, guarentee the answer he/she will give you will 100% put your mind at rest.
