Hi my relative has advanced terminal bowel cancer. He is very uncomfortable and often in pain which disturbs his sleep. It seems that he has only been given regular Cocodamol, which he is worried he will get addicted to (!)

What would be a stronger suitable painkiller. This is only second hand information so I’m not sure about this. Thanks for any advice

  • , sorry you are not getting the full picture. It seems to me that cocodamol is probably not sufficient, and he needs a medical review of his drugs. Addiction is of course not a problem with advanced cancer, but it may be difficult to reassure him. Good luck.

Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!

  • Cocodamol comes in different strengths, and I personally haven't found it addictive. I was on the highest dose,  30/500 for months whilst waiting for my hip replacement, but could stop no bother after. The next one up is morphine which makes me sick, hence the Cocodamol. I believe that might be more addictive but have no experience.

I suggest you speak to your collecterol nurse or someone to see what they suggest. Take care

My husband has colon cancer but I’ve had a spinal issue since birth and have been on all sorts of drugs from tramadol to Valium. There are lots of different pain killers out there, yes some can cause problems but if you are in pain it’s necessary and you can try different drugs to find the best fit. I didn’t have any addiction issues. Definitely speak to his nurse, she can also reassure him of what’s available and any side effects or dependencies. Important thing is to get help as it’s needed. He maybe doesn’t have to take something all the time either. I only took tramadol when it was bad. It was good to have something to turn to when needed.

    Hi SarahSerena

I too have bowel cancer diagnosed in 2016 . And now stage 4 manageable but not curable had a lot of chemo including immunotherapy but all made me ill.  So at the moment not on any treatment,  but I do have a palliative team who managed my pain , as after the first round of chemo I ended up with Neuropathy which effects nerve endings.

Anyway the reason I am posting on here to you is about my pain relief to try and help hubby and yourself . Currently taking amitriptaline for my nerve pain , and slow release morphine and paracetamol when needed and also oromorph . and up.to yet its helping and there is no addiction there , but they have also suggested Radiotherapy for pain which will be discussed on my next visit to get results from my scan

I would like to hear mord about your hubby's journey

But hope this helps a little

    Take care

Thanks for your reply! I took Amitriptaline myself a few years back but it didn’t really help me. You do have to try so many different drugs to find out what works for you - like chemo really! Have you had your scan results yet?

We are just starting the journey. A lot of anger and sadness and frustration but we will get there. Feel free to PM if you want to chat!
