Hi all,
I had my scans yesterday at Basingstoke, was supposed to see the surgeon as well but he was unable to attend so has arranged to video call me tomorrow morning when I will find out whether he is willing to operate on my extensive spread to the liver. (My local hospital have refused to operate hence the 2nd opinion).
I had a call this afternoon out of the blue, it was the surgeon, he gave me the news that he sees no reason not to operate, there has been some progression (been off chemo since end of June) but nothing they can't address! He is still going to video call me tomorrow with more details but didn't want to leave me hanging. What an extremely considerate man, his time is precious yet he still called me knowing how anxious I would be waiting to hear.
I feel incredibly blessed. Right...what to pack?! Xx
Oh Star74 I am lost for words ! I am so happy for you !
You sought out that window of opportunity surgically and despite the hurdles you have brought this around !
Sounds as though it was timely too!

Thank you hun court, just goes to show what differing opinions the surgeons have. I had no idea at the start of this journey, suppose some are just more adventurous and seeking a second opinion can change everything.
Yes, it was timely, perhaps it was always meant to be this way! Just so happened to be my lovely Mums birthday yesterday, she passed away 2 years ago, feels like a good omen.
I will sleep well tonight! Thanks, as ever, for your support.xx
Great that you have the green light for your surgery - Sad that you had to push for it. Best of luck.
Wow. What great news . Very happy for you
I’m new to this . Waiting to see specialist regarding cancer of the bowel and liver.
I don’t understand how some drs blatantly refuse and others will. Why is that ?
I guess that’s why it’s important to get a second opinion .
may I ask. Hold do you go about second opinions
is it from the same team of drs or the same hospital
or do you have to try another hospital.
sorry for all the questions. X
Thank you Net77 , Kareno62, Forester42, and Nelly1955 for your kind comments. I had the video call with the surgeon and I'm all booked in for 10th Nov, eek!!! Appreciate your replies, will update after the op!
Hi , I know hun, it's all so complicated isn't it. I am very lucky to have an amazing oncologist who has had faith in me from the start so it was really just the surgical aspect that I wanted a second opinion on. My local hospital wouldn't operate due to the extensive spread to my liver so my Onc referred me to Basingstoke which I believe is a more specialised centre that takes on more complex surgeries. If however, you are not happy with you care / oncologist you can contact your GP who should be able to help with a second opinion.
Xx
Hi
There are around seven centres of excellence for the liver in the U.K. . You can identify them as they usually do liver transplant work too ! These surgeons are able to do more extensive resections than the teaching hospital staff . Partly because of experience/exposure but also the one near me they have a High Dependency ward just for liver resection work and the staff are skilled in post op care of the liver !
In the past a lot of oncologists a lot of oncologist preferred to use chemo and referrals were much less . That has changed in most cases but as you can see here some people still need to push a bit !
Take care ,
