I haven't got a problem with my eating can you eat anything I don't know what to eat I get confused has nobody's told me

  • Hi

My mum was never told either as she was not at risk of obstructing but chemo did affect her appetite once that started !
Have you got a specialist nurse for advice ? You will get a meeting before chemo actually starts and you could note down some questions as it’s good to know these things !

I haven't met a specialist nurse yet prob meet her on Friday

  • That makes perfect sense !
Some patients are asked to go on a special diet to prevent obstruction but my mum was told she was fine by the oncologist. So definitely one to ask about ! Some will bring in a dietitian to help navigate it but they will give you a lot of information on Friday . In fact it can take a day or two to let it all sink in ! There are some tips on food preparation too but it might be best to find out what your oncologist wants you to do first ! Then we can get you the right information!

  • Hi Winst8

Before my op I ate normally, but like court's mum there was no risk of obstruction. I then had a right hemi colectomy in July and my surgeon said 'eat whatever you usually eat and see how it goes'. The specialist nurse was a wee bit more careful and said to eat smaller platefuls more frequently and bland diet for the first couple of weeks. I am vegetarian so a bland diet is tough so I just ate my usual foods - lots of vegetables, pulses, nuts etc - but slightly smaller portions for the first two or three weeks post op. Apart from being a bit windy (which is nothing new) I've had no problems. Chemo hasn't affected my appetite either (but I've only had one round) so I'm eating same as always. That said definitely check it out with nurse on Friday as you're situation may be different. Good luck.
