Hi my mum is 84 and just been told 4weeks ago she's got uncureble bowel cancer at stage 4
We are all in shock to find this out as she only went to hospital with bad stomach pains
She was in hospital 2 weeks they did loads different scans ect and sent her home with pain killers
We didn't get much information they just said no treatment and can get palletive care
She been home 2 weeks seems OK apart from her legs have swollen up and she got grumpy and saying some random things
So we don't know what to expect or anything
Hi and welcome to the board. I’m sorry to hear about your mum and I’m sure court will be along soon with some wise words. In the meantime is it possible that your mum could have a water infection as this can cause swelling and confusion especially in the elderly?
Just me !
What a shock for your mum and family ! I have to say it is quite sad that they sent her home and you have not been given much information!
Has your mum got an oncologist appointment lined up or is a palliative care team getting involved?
She certainly needs her health needs met and some help managing her fluid retention in her legs. If she gives you permission it might be good to speak to her GP as they should have some feedback into the next step in the process for your mum !
Additionally you might like to phone our helpline staff 0808 808 0000 as they will be able to link you in with resources locally !
I would want to know too why she is saying random things as there could be causes for this that can be helped !
The palliative care nurses should be making some contact to introduce themselves . Your GP should be able to make sure that process is in the pipeline !
The link about explains a bit more about what palliative care involves and who to expect to deliver it !
Send your mum our love and best wishes !
We are also here to support you too! We have. Group for carers who are looking after relatives who are not curable !

Hi Jennyw123
So sorry to hear about your mom's diagnosis, I myself have also been told that my bowel cancer as now gone stage 4 in other areas it was quite a shock to say the least , they can manage it but can't cure it . And I too have pain management too, but like the other guys have said on here it does sound as though your mom could have a water infection . My own mother is 90 yrs old and when she is confused it's due to a water infection.
So get in touch with your own GP hopefully they can give her something for that
Take care stay I touch

Hi sorry to hear yours has gone to stage 4 it's the not knowing what to expect ect we haven't been told much at all don't know what mum been told whats what as she don't talk about it
She's been doctor going hospital tomorrow to have scan on legs making sure no clots
Hopefully once palliative care get in touch we may get some more information on stuff
She not having any treatment for it so what's does that mean is uncureble same as terminal
So hard to get head round what's going on
Hi Jenny ,
Hopefully you will get some answers tomorrow fingers crossed if not ask them ! My daughters came with me to see my oncologist , they did offer me further treatment but unfortunately it made me so ill and I was ending up I'm hospital with some infection if some sort . So not really getting a quantity of life as I was ill more than well , so I decided I didn't want anymore treatment I had been through enough in the last 5 yrs and my family was backing me too as they saw how poorly I was so I was lucky with that it was hard to come to the decision I did but I thought about it hard and fast and discussed with my family too so they would understand ,everything was going OK I felt a lot better but the last time I went to get my scan results it seems that another 2 of the nodes as turned up and could possibly resting in a nerve which is causing me pain and I was getting infections again . So he decided to do another scan that was 2 weeks ago to see what's going on
So I am awaiting my results now should get them when I go to see my oncologist 1st Nov if it is that its causing me pain they offer me Radiotherapy never had it before so don't know what to expect .
Please keep me updated with your mom's progress
Take care Jimbobs
Yeah will do and good luck with scan results hope all goes well for you
Morning Jenny

Take care
