Hello I’ve only just been disagnosed and about to start chemotherapy and radiotherapy not sure what to expect! Any advice people x

  • Hi  and welcome to the board. I had 5 weeks of chemoradiotherapy before surgery in 2016 and it shrank my tumour from 4cm to 1cm. I found it to be very doable if I’m honest.
The chemo is in tablet form and a low doseage which helps the radiotherapy to work. You will be tattooed with tiny dots which they use to line the machine up. Depending on where the tumour is you may lay on your front or back with a full or empty bladder! The machine whirls around for about 5 minutes and you’re done. The waiting about can be the worst bit so I used to get early morning appointments to try and avoid the backlog. The radiographers will check that you’re doing ok and you’ll probably be given a cream to use on the area being treated and immodium/loperamide in case you suffer from any diarrhoea.

I found the chemo gave me tingly feet - like walking on sand- so kept them well moisturised with Aveeno with Shea butter. Fatigue can start to kick in towards the end so just listen to your body and rest if you need to.

Hope this helps but feel free to ask if there’s anything in particular that you want to know about?

    Take caee

  • Hi Tstar

I finished chemo radiotherapy on the 1st of October and like Karen's experience I found it not too bad.

The worst part I had was not thinking I needed a wee after I had been told to drink water around 20 minutes before the radiotherapy Slight smile

Fatigue was and still is a problem but is getting better.

I also had what they called "bladder panic" where it was painful to wee but as long as I kept my liquid input high it was ok.

Chemo gave me cold and tingly hands.

The five weeks flew past oddly enough.

    Good luck with it.
