Flying with nephrostomies

I don’t suppose anyone knows whether it is possible to fly with nephrostomies? Get through airport security? My husband has colon cancer and has two nephrostomies as radiation damaged his bladder beyond use.  Two bags of liquids so an issue, but there must be paperwork that you can get to clear security surely? Does anyone have any experience of this?

  • Hi . I’ve no experience of this but my friend who has a colostomy flew to New York. She rang the airline customer services to see if she could book a seat near the toilets and they happily obliged and also issued her with a sunflower lanyard for hidden disability. She was first on the plane and first off and felt quite royal!

Ive also attached a link to a ‘travelling with a stoma booklet’ which has pages in lots of different languages if there is a chance of him being patted down. You could download it to your phone or just print off the page in the relevant language.

Hope this helps? If not you could try asking his support nurse or get a letter from his gp?

    Take care

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, Karen, really appreciate it. It’s the nephrostomies he is worried about as they hold up to 600mls of liquid each. The stomas are ok, but in theory he could have any kind of liquid in those bags. Will have a read of the link you sent - fingers crossed it will have the answer. Thank you again! x

I have flown with the colostomy before and there is a blue card that is supposed to indicate you have a colostomy. I have nephrostomy Ed too and I am scared to fly with them because of previous treatment. I have a surgery coming up out of state and have decided I will drive rather than have the harassment of TSA.
