Hi all,
I was recently diagnosed with stage 3 and have been put on a Low Residue diet prior to starting Radiotherapy & Chemo. I've always eaten healthily and tried to keep fit etc - lots of fruit, veg, pulses, nuts & seeds etc and am struggling with this to be honest. I've read slightly different guides from three different local health authorities so far so if anyone can give me any hints, tips or even recipes that would enable me to eat healthily whilst on this diet I'd be grateful.
Also, one last question (sorry!) does anyone know how long I'm likely to be on the diet as it wasn't really mentioned at the meeting with my surgeon.
thanks for your help,
Rivs
Hi Rivs
Same here with the Low Residue diet.
Before diagnosis I was struggling with constipation which I know now was caused by the tumour in my bowel. Once I was moved onto the diet and also following the instructions of my colorectal surgeon on Laxido twice a day I have not really struggled since.
I am finishing the five weeks radio / chemo this week and it's only now I am struggling a little but that is the effect of the radiation I have been told.
The one I have followed is this one.

Seems to go against everything we have been told about eating healthy. I am waiting for advice about supplements after I finish chemo on friday as they recommend you dont take supplements during chemo as they could cause issues.
Personally, I am sticking to this until told otherwise.
HAd a takeaway curry last night but made sure I chose one without beans and the other stuff in it so it's a case of finding what works for you and what you enjoy.
Good luck.
Kev
Hi Kev,
Thanks for that, it's interesting looking at your leaflet as the one I was given said I couldn't have onions...
Glad you mentioned the supplements as well - I'll ask about that before I start the chemo as I've been taking some multivits to offset the lack of fruit & Veg.
Thanks again mate.

Hi Rivs and here’s another link for you - they’re all a bit different arent they?
https://elht.nhs.uk/application/files/3315/8556/0327/DIET-002-LowFibrelowresiduediet-2019.pdf
Basically you’re looking at things that aren’t going to aggravate the bowel and yes it’s not very healthy. You could try smoothies to get some extra fruit in and blend vegetables into a soup? I lived off jacket potatos (leaving the skin) with cottage cheese in hospital and smoked haddock and mash potato before my last colonoscopy. There’s lots of information sheets online from various health authorities and some are a lot stricter than others.
They may expect you to carry on with this until after your radiotherapy ends but you could perhaps give your Colorectal Support Nurse a ring to check?
To add insult to injury they dont like you taking vitamins alongside chemo in case they react.
Crap isn’t if? You go from feeling fit and healthy to having treatment and restrictions which are supposed to make you better but make you feel worse!
Take care

Hi Rivs,
I had surgery 8 weeks ago & now have a permanent stoma. Up until now I have been on a low residue diet but have been told I can gradually introduce fibre into my diet. Will eventually be able to eat almost anything but I am taking it very slowly. Hopefully it will be the same for you.
Hi ollies Mum,
Nice to meet you and it's good to hear about re-introducing fibre - I do miss veg!.
I hope you're recovering well from the surgery and feeling good about it all.
Cheers
Rivs
