stoma diet

I've mentioned diets before but have just remembered that plain probiotic yoghurt, Yakult or Aptamil, and fish, for me, are all foods that cause the least problems regarding digestion although fish causes a smelly output.

For me - Jellies or jelly sweets, marshmellows and crisps help to thicken output as does rice.

Chicken, for some reason quickly goes through me. I love mature cheddar cheese but it doesn't love me. My system tolerates mild cheddar or edam much better.  I love chocolate but that also goes through me. Saying this I can cheat a little if I indulge before 1pm.

  • Thanks Artsie. The district nurse had a wee word with her the other day which has really helped. My wife was understandably not herself and was giving me grief for the least wee thing i.e. I was nagging her for asking what she would like to eat or I wasn't giving her enough pain killers or I wasn't filling her hot water bottle enough etc. Thankfully she is now a bit more of a "patient patient" and is now eating a bit more and hpefully things will improve as the days go bye.

    Take care

  • Hi Mr Mac

Yes, it's definitely a shock to the system.  Give it a bit of time though and I'm sure that Mrs Mac will definitely improve and feel much less vulnerable.  I know that I felt incredibly angry (mostly with myself) immediately after the diagnosis and op as I couldn't do what I wanted, couldn't eat what I wanted and just felt that my body had totally let me down.  That phase passed though and I now realise that I am actually very lucky.

Come and join us on the stoma group too.  Lots of kind folks and helpful advice on there -
