Can you mash beans and eat them if you have an ileostomy? I had it June 29, 2020. I will have it the rest of my life. I always ate chili and have not had any since the surgery. I miss it. Even puree it anything. Please help.
Maybe try a small portion first.well chewed, and see how it goes.
Hi . The main thing to remember is chew, chew, chew and then chew some more. Personally I don’t like kidney beans so always have baked beans in my chilli (I know!) and I was always ok with my stoma. My stoma nurse told me to just try things and if it didn’t agree with the stoma then to try again a few months later.
The main things to avoid are things that will clog together and block your stoma and things that go through undigested like sweet corn. I remember a lady on the other board having a biscuit with dessicated coconut in and having a very embarrassing incident in the hairdressers.
I also ate mushrooms but made sure I chewed well as I actually watched my stoma spit out a slice of mushroom when I was changing it once! Katz51 I think I was ok with courgette skin as we often have them in tinned tomatoes with fish and mash? Think things like apple skins and jacket potatos would be a bit tough though.
Take care

Hi Raydar. I had surgery in January 2021 and have a (hopefully) temporary ileostomy. I really missed chilli too to begin with but have been eating it since July, with Kidney beans, with no ill effects, I've also eaten butter beans too. I've also tried salad, as I missed it so much and again my stoma has coped, although I do remove cucumber skins and chop tomatoes and peppers very small and try to chew it well. I haven't as yet tried mushrooms as I was told not to have these or sweetcorn, but as Karen has eaten mushrooms I think I'll now give these a try too.
Worth a try with a small, well chewed portion. Good luck.
