Left hemicolectomy in May

I had the op in May - 30cm of colon lost, tumour gone and all the glands removed were free of cancer......

II'm not expecting miracles but I still feel so sensitive inside where, I presume, are the operation sites - just beneath my ribs on the left & right side and 4in or so beneath on the left. If I slouch I'm really uncomfortable. I have to sit bolt upright in the chair like a schoolmistress. I'm still in elasticated waists as the waist button hurts!

The wind has more or less stopped, a curry a few weeks ago went through me with remarkable speed but apart from that all seems to be in order apart from feeling a bit nauseous from time to time or maybe it's indigestion, it's difficult to tell. It doesn't take much to get me exhausted tho - a day of the grandchildren and I'm no good for anything

It's almost 4 months now since the operation

Is there anyone out there who has had the same op who can give me a rough idea how long the internal discomfort lasts? That is worrying me a bit

The scan appt is in early October I'm just hoping it will be good news

Thanks

  • morning. I hope you are feeling better today. My husband experienced some discomfort post op he was just told that it was things returning to normal. If you are feeling worried please contact your team for some reassurance they may even scan you earlier to check things out. Xx

Swimwalker hi, I had a right hemi-colectomy Oct 2019, I did have some issues post-op such as certain foods going right through and bloating, trapped wind feeling. It settled after 12 months. I was careful what I ate and found lactose free milk helped with the vague stomach discomfort, no idea why this helped, my consultant also advised taking Imodium for the toilet rush. I still take Imodium if I’m out for the day though and I occasionally take buscopan as they work well for me. It would be worth having a chat with the nurses though I think. Hope you can sort it,

  • Real thanks for your reply - by chance the hospital had already arranged a scan for me for early October - Sue20 - below - has suggested lactose free - I think that will be my next step

  • Thanks for your suggestions, they are appreciated - funnily enough I wondered whether it could be coffee so last week I drank peppermint or ginger type tea bags - whether it was the coffee or the milk I've yet to find out but I did seem better - today I've been drinking weak black coffee today.... It's really good to have this sort of  group where there are people who have personal experience and can help
