Metastatic spread to lung.

Hi, surgeon phoned today. The tumour in my lung, full lobe removed, is a spread from the rectal cancer I was diagnosed with in 2017. All the surgeon could say was at this point I don't need anymore lung removed.

I will now be referred elsewhere. She couldn't say if I'd need further treatment. When I finished rectal cancer treatment 2018, they told me it was all gone. I had full APR with end colostomy. Chemo and radio before surgery, chemo after.

Surely I will need more chemo now to be on the safe side? Dread it but want the best chance.

Thanks xx

  • Hi

I think some hospitals prefer post op chemo and others don’t seem to . My own mum did not but her oncologist gave a reason why ! My mum’s tumour in her lung was extremely slow growing and they had been observing it for two years . Chemo apparently works best on faster growing tumours due to the rate of cell division so she did not see the benefit would be gained her her particular situation . I think factors like these are taken into consideration when they make their decisions!

It was over five years ago now and thankfully no further intervention required .

Hope your keeping ok following surgery ! My mum had a section taken away but not a lobe and recovered very well .

  • Hi Cycleoldlady my bowel cancer was removed 2018, but returned one year later in my lungs and abdominal cavity and shoulder. I'm on immunotherapy and have been stable for 11months, there are treatments out there. Two heartsTwo hearts

What is immunotherapy? Does it make you sick like chemo? Good luck cx

I've been really upset. 4 weeks out I was expecting to be as fit as I was, walking 14 minute miles, now it's 25 to 29, my breathing scares me, god help folk wi asthma that have this too. Xx

  • Immunotherapy is a drug given intravenously I'm on Nivolumab every 4weeks, it works with your immune system to fight the cancer. As for side effects, itching on body and scalp constipation a few mouth sores that's what I've had. It's kinder than chemo .

  • My older sister had a lobe removed 5years ago. She is working, 2 jobs. She gets breathless in strong wind, and just doesn't rush about. You'll find your new way xx

So it's different, kinder, than chemo?

  • Yes one of the new kids on the block x

  • Was surgery quite recent? I actually think that’s quite well done if surgery was not too long ago !

Immunotherapy works best for a certain cell type . MSI ( microsatellite instability) being one of them ! One to ask your team about !
