I have found out that I will be having Xelox as my chemo treatment.

I have been told I won’t lose my hair but it will thin, will it still fall out in clumps, should I have it cut short first?

Any other side affects, will I be well enough to work from home, any advice?

Thanks

  • Hi

My mum cut hers before learning about it just thinning ! She would have been fine just leaving it alone . She lost about a third of it but still plenty to cover her head !

    Hope your doing ok !

    Take care ,

  • Not bad thanks, surgery went well as far as I can make out. I’ll leave my hair alone!

  • Hi Jopeg,

I had 4 cycles of Xerox (Capox) and was very pleased that during chemo my hair was unaffected.  However, a few weeks after finishing chemo, I realised that I had started to shed hair like a dog moulting! Someone on here summed it up well, saying “I leave a trail behind me”. I reacted by only washing it once a week rather than every couple of days, but I’m not sure if that made any difference. I didn’t have it cut short, just usual trims, and it has never come out in clumps, but it has definitely “thinned”. I now have a “sleek” bob rather than a thick one and my parting is wider. My husband says no-one notices but I suspect he is just being kind! I am now nearly 4 months post-chemo and I think the shedding is slowing down, so hopefully it will stop soon. Apparently, my hair may even thicken up again, fingers crossed!
re other side effects - everyone reacts differently and some people have little or none. I think I had most of them which was pretty grim but after each cycle my oncologist listened to my symptoms, assured me they were normal, and reduced the dose. By the fourth cycle I had virtually no side-effects. I definitely could not have worked from home for at least a week of each cycle, but I know some people do. The trouble is, there seems to be no way of knowing who is going to suffer side-effects and who will sail through chemo,
Wishing you a side-effect-free journey! Best of luck x

  • Hi I had capox and lost the hair on my head but not my eyebrows, eyelashes or those pesky chin hairs.

18 mths on my hair is thicker, longer and less greasy than before.it is also grey but as I used to dye it before that may have happened anyway.

Dont worry too much as everyone is different

    All the best

    Kath

  • Thank you so much. This gives me a bit of a picture of what could happen, so very helpful. I hope you are doing well post-chemo. X

My hair is ok.....touch wood....but then I only wash it once a week, and have to use loads of gel and hairspray...as I can't stand flat lifeless hair...I usually perm it...and then a few weeks later put highlights in....but haven't dared do that since this xelox treatment ...I had every side effect too...too numerous to mention....but I've been off treatment for a few weeks...waiting for scans....but I have hand and feet trouble.....they were very red .....and now I've lost all my fingerprints....so my fingers and feet are slippery....difficult to hold things.....but not as bad as the electric shocks with the oxaliplatin ....and the throat spasms.....that was hard......does anyone know if fingerprints will grow back? Hopefully sometime I will be able to go to America to see my daughter and granddaughter ....but am worried about my fingerprints....as you have to do that going through customs.....and as they have my fingerprints on file.....I'm hoping they will still let me through....though...that's a long way off.....as I'm not sure what my next stage will be....

    Hi Jopeg,

I have had 2 cycles of Xelox, due 3rd next week.  I haven’t lost any more hair than I usually do do I wouldn’t cut it short just yet, see how you get on first.

I have found tiredness and nausea the worst 2 side effects. I can get out yo walk my dogs but need a nap afterwards. Fortunately, the nausea doesn’t hit me until 2 days after infusion then clears after 4-5 days. In my week off I don’t need any anti sickness meds and tiredness eases too. My hands and feet are red and sore but I haven’t had any peeling.

I wish you well with your treatment Blush

  • Thanks Etta

That gives me an idea what to expect.

I hope the rest of your treatment goes well too.
