Hi everyone not been on for a while my husband is making a slow steady recovery since his pelvic exenteration ...my worry now is he has the kras wild gene so does this mean despite cancer being removed it will come back again already had it twice ...also my children will they have inherited this gene ...my son is 24 and has to have a colonoscopy and gastroscopy because of change in bowel habits and significant weightloss we are all terrified .

This leaflet is good at explaining !  My understanding is despite its name it’s the normal form of the structure ! So would make him suitable for targeted therapy ! But check it out for yourself just in case I have it wrong !

Remember surgery is the best he could have hoped for ! My mum has had two recurrences.  It came back in her liver and later her lung . Two significant differences was the tumour burden . Significantly smaller picked up on scans and resolved quickly . Life saving solutions quickly implemented! That was the benefit of robust scanning . Then nothing for five years and the surprise of being discharged !

Glad he is recovering well but I often think it’s at this point that the people supporting the person suddenly feel overwhelmed. The urgency has settled a bit !

Has your husband tumour been tested for lynch syndrome ? The genetic side I am unsure of but it’s a good juncture to investigate and get your children on early surveillance as that changes long term outcomes
I am sorry to hear about your son and so many other things are thankfully more statistically likely but when you have endured as a family what your husband has gone through it does make you vulnerable to such worries ! You are doing the right thing getting him seen and assessed and hopefully ease all your minds !

Even with Kras mutations the research seems to indicate it is controversial to say they have a negative prognostic outcome !

Hope this part can put your mind at rest but all the very best and I hope your son gets some good news too!

Hi yes he was tested because the cancer came back after 6 months he was treated with chemo and targeted therapy called cetuximab....also could explain he had a pituitary tumor diagnosed 16 year ago and despite every treatment and a debulking op it continued to regrow until he was sent for gamma knife surgery in dec 2018 then in april 2019 he was diagnosed with colerectal cancer he had chemo and radoitherapy and a transanal mesorectal excision...he was too ill with complications to have adjuvent chemo and then cancer returned in april last year so more chemo and targeted therapy he was then told inoperable but thankfully an amazing dr took the challenge to perform pelvic exenteration and he is doing well so far it just makes me wonder if this gene will keep bringing cancer back on a good note the pituitary tumor is very small now and his sight is back not 100% but a significant improvement ..my son is a worry though my head says stress related but cant help thinking he may have his fathers gene and i really dont know how i will cope with that ...but trying not to worry until something to worry about thank you for always being there xx

  • Gosh he has been through a lot ! Was he positive for lynch syndrome?
I have to be truthful my own digestive tract has been up and down since my mum’s diagnosis! How I handle my stress and hard to know what the symptoms mean at times !

Your poor son will have been worried about his dad !

These wonderful surgeons that go a bit further really give us our relatives back ! My mum was fortunate to get a surgical window too and we knew it ! She jumped at it with both hands !
My mum could not have tolerated post op chemo , she was too weak ! It is so individual!
