Just out of hospital after the loop reversal 10 days ago. My initial op was in Nov 2020 & didn’t require any chemo etc, was caught early. Colon wasn’t happy & took a while to start producing poo, was only clear fluid initially. My stomach is quite blotted & uncomfortable but I suspect this would be expected as the colon tries to settle. Looking for some help/advice from those who’ve been there.
Is the distended stomach normal & does it settle eventually
Any suggestions for a good barrier cream to help stop the burning/pain when going I’ve been using a barrier cream plus some germoleen
suggestions on food to eat/not eat
any other things that would be good to know!!!
Hi Jmmac, after my reversal I didn't experience any bloating or discomfort, produced small bits with liquid which gradually increased in density. I was advised to stick to a low fibre diet, as with the stoma, and then gradually introduce fibre. Eight months now after the reversal I basically eat anything. So I can only suggest introducing new things one at a time and see how they go, I also take probiotics as my reversal was a year after the main op and I wanted to help repopulate the bacteria.
Its a bit of a try things and see how it goes. For cream, I didn't have too much of a problem but did use Sudacream if I did.
If the discomfort continues I would try to get hold of your back up team.
All the best, John
Thanks for that. I’m hoping most people have a similar experience as you’ve had. I think mines was a bit complicated because the colon went to sleep, as they called it & hopefully things will settle down in a week or two.
Did you have a lower anterior resection? or was it higher up? think that can make a difference.
Unfortunately you don’t read about many successful reversals on these type of sites… usually it’s about problems, as you’d expect.
I had the problem with the ileus when I had my lower anterior resection and had to stay in for eleven days, but the reversal went ok and I was only in for two.
You do hear from people who have problems but I think that there are more who get to a new 'normal' that they are happy to accept against the bag. For instance, this weekend I am at a hotel with a car club on our first event for almost two years, and not having to worry unduly about my innards.
I hope that with time you get a good outcome as well.
Hope you’ve had a great weekend & the weather has been good.
it’s good to hear a positive outcome. Here’s hoping I can report the same in the near future.
