Hello!
my partner has his pre op assessment on Thursday and his surgery has been set for on 5th July for removing a cancer on his abdominal cavity - we are very anxious about it which is understandable, if any one of you had it? Let us know. If successful with keyhole or ended up having an actual op to remove it? And how long the recovery for keyhole alone or keyhole and surgery as we will tie the knot on 24.7.21
Also - he is a stage 4 colon cancer patient - some point is he able to have a tattoo done? As he really really wants it so badly but I’m not sure if he’s able to have it?
thank you

Hi Twinkles07
Do you mean having a tattoo after surgery? This is the guidance on cancer research for during treatment and again seems to be best to not do anything during treatment that raises the risk of infection .
Do you know the name of the surgery and I will try and find someone to give you some relevant information. Great to hear he is getting surgery ! That’s good news .

This is Macmillan’s information sheet on the various types of surgery . It gives diagrams on them too! Also goes over the key whole and open surgery !

This is bowel cancer U.K. and they have some good information. If you know the area of the bowel being operated on we will also try and get people to give their own experiences for you .

Hi Twinkles07
I have had a bit more time to read today ! It was the lymph node they are operating on ? Sorry I was thinking bowel tumour !
I can share a bit as my mum had two open surgeries one keyhole . The keyhole was for a lung met ! They went in through her rib cage . Two days later she was up and walking around and sent home . Two weeks later she was out and about again .
The open surgery was initially a big zip line down her tummy ! Bearing in mind she was 68 at that point she was able to put on a wet suit and go sea kayaking although did not do most of the rowing ! Her liver surgery she was again open surgery and a year after her big bowel surgery . This time they went in along the left of the body . It healed not too badly .
Keyhole was by far the easiest in terms of recovery but your partner is much younger than my mum so hopefully that will be in his favour too!
Also given it’s not an organ he will not have the recovery from that aspect . Totally understandable to feel anxious but if he can get keyhole surgery I think it will surprise him the difference in recovery.

Thank you for clarifying this with me and definitely reassuring to hear this but like you said my partner is younger and hopefully will be in his favour to recover.
His surgery is officially booked on 7th July. Had a meeting with his surgeon this morning and feeling positive and wasn’t expecting what he said… when he first got diagnosed it was stage 4 and now he’s a stage 3 - surgeon also said if his operation is successfuL and managed to remove all the cancer in his one area and no spread afterwards then he will be in stage 2…
I’m just speechless because all this started in December as stage 4 and now it’s almost end of June and he’s in stage 3 with a possibility of stage 2 if op is successful.
can this happen? but at the same time I’m keeping my guard up after he’s out of surgery and cancer’s removed then I can breathe properly.
take care
Hi Twinkles07
What wonderful news ! Could there be a better wedding present !
I think it must be possible for some people as my mum made it from stage 4 to cured ! So pleased you got to hear such good news after all you have both been through . July will be such a month of celebration for you both once he recovers . You both must be totally delighted .
Only natural to protect yourself but this all sounds very good news .
Let us know how the surgery goes and we are looking forward to a month of good news for you .
