I am 2weeks post rectal radiotherapy. The side effects have kicked, soreness, diarrhoea, soreness in my rectum and the tiredness is overwhelming. Although I was told what to expect, it has taken me by surprise at how intense these side effects are. I am trying to stay positive, but I am really struggling with them. What are you all doing to cope please?

Hi . Hopefully the side effects won’t last much longer - all you can really do is try to listen to your body - do some light exercise if you can and rest when you need to.
Ive attached a link to a post that I replied to a couple of days ago which may help?
Take care

Hi Tikkie64,
So sorry to hear your problems after the radiotherapy, as this was a couple of days ago I hope that you are feeling better already. My treatment was 5 weeks of radiotherapy with capecitabine and I had few side effects, so I don't know if I can be of help. Did you have a similar treatment? I can only suggest loperamide for the diarrhoea and take 2 half an hour before each meal, take more if 2 doesn't work. I didn't have a sore rectum but after my reversal of the ileostomy I was recommended the wet wipes with cream instead of using paper. if it is that sort of soreness. As for fatigue, this will get better, I used to have a sleep in the afternoon each day, you will be tired and rest can only do you good.
If your problems continue then contact your colorectal team and tell them how you feel.
What is the next stage of your treatment?
AI wish you all the best for a speedy recovery
John
I have overcome all the problems from the radiotherapy except for the tiredness. I am waiting on an appt with my surgeon as the next stage is an operation for a stoma. I have found everything so overwhelming, worrying about to expect. Plus the waiting is crazy, Hoping I hear something shortly, at least then I can prepare.
I think most of my worry is going through the same thing as I did with the polyp removal. I was a day case, sent home afterwards, 2 days later rushed back in seriously ill with an infection. I was in hospital 4 weeks, with several setbacks and COVID, had to have another operation. But got through it. The thought of infection etc I dread. But I am trying to keep positive.
.
I feel for you It was such an unusual thing to happen and you had it rough ! Totally understandable that would leave you apprehensive. Hope it’s much smoother this time !
Take care ,
