My husband had just had 5 radiotherapy treatments, his last treatment was Friday.  He has been reasonably well very tired and just a little bit of discomfort which he expected.

He started yesterday Sunday, with diarrhoea and has been up all night, needing to go to the toilet all the time! I have given him dehydration sachets.  He’s just no energy at all just feels dreadful!  Just wanted any advice please that might help, hopefully it won’t last too long for him.

He has a 3 week gap and then begins chemotherapy to try and get his tumour in his bowel operable.

Thank you

  • Hi . Sorry to hear that your hubby is struggling - the loss of fluid coupled with a broken nights sleep will have left him shattered. Giving him diarolyte is good. Have you been given any immodium/loperamide? I was given some before starting treatment and it helps with the diarrhoea. Perhaps you could give his Colorectal Support Nurse a ring to run it past her for advice or the nurses on here on 0808 808 00 00

Hope he starts to feel better soon

    Take care

Hi Spike I had the same treatment and yes it knocks you about because it’s a targeted treatment. I too had severe diarrhoea and resorted to buying Men’s sanitary wear just so I could be somewhere near normal. I also suffered from pain in my anus but my oncologist doctor gave me morphine and Codeine Phosphate tablets which you use with paracetamol tablets as they both attach pain in different ways. I have now had my first course of chemotherapy which doesn’t seem to effect me that much so far. My biggest problem is getting to sleep through the night. I also decided to have more starchy food in order to slow my motions down and give the bowls time to form stools which in the most part works. Don’t forget to drink 2 litres of water every day to combat dehydration. Look up and forward every action counts
