My Dad has Stage 3 cancer and suffers from Alzemheirs and needs full time car. He has had a succesful removal of a single tumour from the lower rectum and has a temp stoma. The surgery has left his mind worse than previously from a man who could look after himself(so to speak) to one that while still there needs looked after. The question is chemo. The doctors don't recommend it as it would further damage his mind and it would only decrease the chances of cancer coming back by 10%. Overall they've given him a 50% chance even though they removed the cancer and only 1/13 lymph nodes tested cancerous. They have also found a cist in the liver and plan to investigate

Hard to tell if chemo is really worth it.

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your dad ! Surgery can be tricky if someone has dementia. If you would like to chat this through with our helpline staff 0808 808 0000 the nurses would be more than happy to do that .

It’s a tough situation and at a certain point in my mum’s treatment which has been over twelve years I know she has changed her approach from aggressively pursuing treatment to finding a middle pathway that would keep her quality of life central to any decisions. After her last lung resection they suggested operation only and we thought that was ok . To be honest we never asked about the stats .
But our helpline staff would have more insight into the situation than I would have .

You sound very caring towards your dad . He is fortunate to have you .

    Take care ,

    Court
