Hi all .My husband had his surgery on the 18th December  to remove his bowels , and fit stoma. There was a few complications as there was more cancer than first thought. He was in hospital for 26 days. He is still very weak and poor appetite.  Dietician has tried various food supplements  but he does like them. Has anyone any tips on how to build him up or how to stimulate his appetite as he is losing weight every week.Thank you.

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your husband . I can reassure you it will improve . But it’s so very hard to watch . You might like to speak to our helpline staff as they will have some good information. 0808 808 0000.

My mum lost  three stones during surgery / chemo and getting her to eat became a full on battle . Even to drink at times . To be fair the build up stuff can be pretty rank . We did find a chicken soup one at Morrison. That was around 300 calories if I remember right but had all the nutrients in it . So we settled on that with a piece of toast at lunch time . We used M and S high calorie yogurts and small desserts . We decided if we just got enough in her for survival, it would naturally start resolving. But we made every mouthful count in terms of calories.

She could only take small quantities, that she did not wish to see again !!! So we got the grandchildren to make her milk shakes . In them we added a bar of chocolate , scoop of ice cream and some milk !! It was a complete calorie hit and she only had to sip it.

My mum actually eats really healthy food so this was a complete departure but it was only for a few weeks to restore the balance .
She was losing weight so fast !

Macdonalds milk shakes are also full of calories !

After a while she was able to return to her normal diet and the weight slowly returned .

That part was really hard to watch !

    Take care ,
