prucedure with only gas and air

  • Hi, sorry to read your predicament. I’m sure that you can choose and ask for sedation. I asked for sedition as I knew gas and air wouldn’t e enough. Explain to the Nurse beforehand I’m sure they’ll advise it anyway because of your anxiety.

Hope all goes well for you!

  • I have asked for sedation but consultant said it not recommended as it only twenty minute procedure I have ask for a price to go private but have been told it not necessary as gas and air sufficient but it not for me did u find sedation better

  • I’m pretty sure it’s your choice, and you can request it especially for anxiety. I was offered both but choose sedition. I’ve never had gas and air so can’t compare, I was so anxious and scared because I knew it was bad news, I asked for more sedition while the nurse was doing the colonoscopy because of the cramping in my stomach. I was told the sedition didn’t work for me because I was so nervous and anxious, it wasn’t so much painful just uncomfortable. I was so alert and saw everything. So thinking would gas and air have been a better option for me? Some say they have sedition and don’t remember a thing, unfortunately remember everything. So I can’t answer which is better but tell he nurse when she does like the pre colonoscopy questions that you want sedition.

  • Hi . Have you had a letter about it and does it only offer gas and air in the letter? It’s a few years since mine but I was offered gas and air or sedation. The sedation does not put you to sleep - it is put in through a cannula in the back of your hand and makes you a bit dreamy but still able to talk and see what’s going on on the screen. You are not allowed to drive yourself home after this.

  • I have asked for sedative as it said if soeak

to consultant but consultant said gas and air

  • Hi Cranagh

I recently had a follow up colonoscopy and was offered sedation or gas and air. I tried the gas and air and it was fine. I understand they use it quite a lot for women in labour, though I wouldn't know much about that but I hear it is painful! If you are having a sigmoidoscopy and not the full colonoscopy they wont be going around all the uncomfortable bends, just looking at the the first part of the colon so it shouldn't be too bad.

Hope it goes well for you

  • My main worry Is bad experience since I was fifteen with getting procedures and no gas and air it had left me scarred for anxiety issues

  • I know it is easy to say try not to get too anxious but the majority of the time these procedures work fine and without pain. At our hospital, for an endoscopy, you first see a nurse who goes through the procedure with you. If it is the same with your hospital talk to the nurse and tell her of your concern and your previous experience. I am sure she or he will be sympathetic and help you, possibly even sort out the sedation that you want even if it isn't thought necessary.

    You will be fine
