Afternoon Everyone,

Hope your weekends are all good and fine.

I'm having a liver resection on Tuesday, mixed feelings. I have the usual surgery anxiety in abundance as well as the irrational fear of bleeding out on the operating table in true dramatic fashion.

I'm also full of gratitude that this is a possibility for me at all.

It's an open one and there will be a bit of ablation thrown in.

My question is, has anyone had one, any advice/tips etc?

Many thanks in advance Heart

  • Oh, I'm not sure if I can reassure you or not.

I had one in 2017 just 12 weeks after my bowel resection and loop ileostomy.

They had seen a "shadow" on the scan and it was an exploratory operation just in case the cancer had spread to the liver.

When I went to see the surgeon for an appointment, he advised me to have the operation. I asked when it would be and he replied "I can do it for you tomorrow if you like" !

So, it was very short notice indeed. I went through all the pre op checks that afternoon and returned at 7am the following morning. I stayed in hospital for a week over the Easter Holidays.

Anyway, I'm pleased to tell you that the operation went according to plan and the pathology dept couldn't find any trace of "spread".

It was quite tiring afterwards but I was up and about after a couple of days. I was even able to walk some distance to the shopping area at the hospital for a coffee and to buy Easter eggs as gifts!

I suffered little pain and they looked after me very well.

I had a very large scar like an envelope(App 15 iinches) but I was quite proud of it really. It healed up without any problems although I had to visit my GP practice to have the stitches etc remove.

Hopefully, all will go well for you too.  Just take things easy for a while.

I was back cycling and swimming after two months.

@JonnyJ thank you so.much, I'm glad your recovery went well.

I do quite a lot of excercise too so am hoping to get back to that as soon as possible.

  • Hi ,

All the very best and I hope it all goes smoothly . My mUm has had four wedge resections and one large resection removing 73% of her liver . Here is  a really reassuring point that I was given by a very reliable source who works in theatre . The instrument the surgeon uses seals as it cuts . Is that not incredibly clever . So I hope that reduces your concern regarding the blood bath aspect .

What I would say the staff , particularly in the HD afterwards are incredibly skilled and attentive.

Totally understandable to feel concerned. My mum said only the other day she found the bowel surgery harder although it was a quicker recovery,

Looking forward to hearing you are safely through and in recovery getting well taken care of .

@court thank you. I know I have to have it but like everything else in this game it's waiting and wo dering that does your head in isn't it?!?

If only there was a medication to switch your brain off prior to any surgery Sweat smile

  • Sounds the prefect solution . How wonderful would that be !

One pill , no more worry !

    Have a good evening .

  • You haven't stated the reasons for your operation, Elley, or how serious it is expected to be. I'm assuming it's for similar circumstances as myself seeing as you've posted on the bowel forum?

Anyway, while it did seem like a very big deal at the time, things healed remarkable quickly and I was "well enough" to start chemotherapy a couple of months later too. A mixed blessing, maybe?

However, I've had no trouble at all with the liver side of things whereas I've continued to have "niggles" and minor issues over the years with my bowel and stoma. Nothing major, thankfully, and so far(fingers crossed) no recurrence of the cancer.

So don't worry too much. As I say, you'll be well looked after.

Thank you. I do definitely have some liver metastases but they can operate, which is good. My bowel operation was surprisingly straightforward but for some reason this one has got under my skin a bit more, which is just me.overthknking it.
