Hi, my mum has recently gone through a five day radiotherapy treatment and now has the side effects, do these last and any hints how to deal with them

  • Hi

Although the booklet at the end covers side effects it does not give too many solutions . Is it skin irritation? I could maybe tag a few people with the right insight into the thread to help your mum if that’s the issue .

We also have a support line and the nurses might be able to help you . 0808 808 0000

You might also like to use the search function at the top right hand side of the page ( magnifying glass) . Some other posts might give you some insight .

Glad to hear your mum is safely through that part of treatment and hope the side effects lessen quickly .

Hi, my mum had the 5 day high dose radiotherapy in December 2020.  Since then she had increased urgency and leakage, although this weekend the leakage seems to have stopped.  We got her incontinence pads from the internet and pads to cover the bed and chairs.  She really sufferred with it because she is a proud lady and likes to keep clean and look after herself.  She also had extreme fatigue and spent week 4 mostly in bed getting up to wash and eat, but she is better from that now. She lost her appetite too and again this weekend it seems to have come back.  So we all sufferred a lot for 5 weeks after the radiotherapy but this week the 6th week, she seems to be turning a corner and looking brighter.  I just hope and pray it has worked.

Thanks somuch for the response, we have had to call an ambulance today as mum had a fall and couldnt get up.  She is continually going to the toilet and hasn’t eaten and can barely walk a d in serious pain. They say this is all part 9f the side effects but am worried that it could be an infection

  • Hi

So sorry to hear about your mum . Can I ask if she had chemo whilst having radiotherapy ? They will get this turned around for her . My mum had all of those symptoms from having her electrolytes knocked off . Low potassium for her . Maybe make sure they check them all out . Like you say urine infections can also be problematic. Hope she is getting well taken care of .

My mum had a fall a couple of weeks ago.  My brother and I had to lift her.  I think it was the lack of eating and diarrhoea.  It was frightening.  She is in her 80s and has really suffered.
