  • Hi . Have you had a meeting with your stoma nurse? They will be a huge support for you both while you’re in hospital and also once you’re home. The nurses will initially clean your stoma and change your bag for you but the quicker you can do it yourself then the quicker you will get home.

Its a bit daunting at first but you will be able to get into a routine and know what foods can have what effects. The nurses will provide you with different bags to try so you can choose the one that you feel most comfortable with. Your chosen provider will deliver your supplies to your door and will also have lots of useful information for you. Your stoma will shrink over the first few weeks so its important to measure it to cut the bag to the right size so you don’t get sore skin. I used to change my bag every 2 days and do it in a morning when it was less active. I used to set my little stall out on the bathroom window sill and could be done in 5 minutes.

Clothing - try not to squash the stoma under a tight waistband as it can cause the output to collect round the top of the bag and leak. I liked ‘big’ knickers as the bag felt a bit more supported but you’ll find whatever you feel most comfortable with.

I don’t want to bombard you with information so maybe come back with any questions once you’re home and settled? There is an Ileostomy, Colostomy and Stoma Support site on here but it seems very quiet at the minute.

Ive attached a link to a booklet regarding diet which might be of interest. Your nurses will warn you that certain foods should be avoided to prevent a potential blockage and remember to chew, chew, chew your food.

  • Hi Cheerful mum. I had my stoma in July 2019. I have no problem with it really. You just need to be aware of where there are toilets when you're out and about  although I've only needed them once. You soon get into a routine. I find not eating after my evening meal means I get through the night without having to change my pouch. Good luck with your operation.
