Finally got to the planning meeting

Well, what a day, we arrived at the hospital for the planning meeting for my husband, stage 4 bowel-cancer with mets in his liver. The Consultant hasn't had the meeting with the mdt as it was supposed to be last Friday, but has moved to this Friday, so not quite where we thought we'd be. However as you all said, once we had a plan we'd feel better, and with our sort of plan we definitely are feeling that things are starting to move.

The Consultant confirmed today it's probably chemo first to shrink the tumors (one of the liver mets is 8cms),then surgery, but if hubby has any troubles then he would go for surgery on the colon first. My husband despite the stage 4 diagnosis has few symptoms, just a niggly ache in his right side, and a dull back pain. He says as hubby is in good shape, it's positive and there won't be a delay in which ever treatment is concluded, after Friday's meeting, he wants to crack on while hubby is in good shape. He's going to call on Friday to confirm what the team agree is the best route, he talked around stoma outcome, but felt it wouldn't come to that, but wanted to know my husband's thoughts etc. We are just relieved there is a route, although we know it's a tough one.

We didn't come home with staging, any scans or anything, I asked a few questions and the Consultant was keen to say, leave it with him, don't worry about the details, you'll only google and worry yourself. This approach certainly works for my husband, he was clear at the meeting, he doesn't want a prognosis, the Consultant said that was good as it's important to have a positive mind, and no one can really predict. For me I'm a detail's girl, and I have none, except the CEA is in the thousands at the moment and he wants it to be less than 5. Of course I've googled this!

Just worried we have the right man for the job xx

  • Hi ,

Well done both of you . Always good to get that meeting over and done with . A positive oncologist is quite a good thing in the long run . I think so much emotion is packed into one small meeting it’s hard not to have an unsettled feeling after it . Even now I am always shattered after an oncology appointment .

At this stage I think treatment is pretty universal. It does sound as though he has a plan in his minds eye. That’s a bit of an indicator on what he hopes to pursue.
After Friday he will be able to give you a timescale to start chemo . Hopefully you will get a boost watching the CEA coming down .
It is good that it’s an approach that works with your husband. But I hear you , the way I handled that was to quietly read research and get a grasp of treatment options , see what was being achieved. The staging details we got after surgery so we had a bit of a wait but it is easier to get into a routine with chemo and get that established .
It also pays to remember the CEA is just a protein . My mum’s was hardly raised at all but had the cheek to go up during chemo . It’s only so useful . But it has its place too .

Have a relaxing evening and glad to managed well today .

    Take care ,

  • Thanks Court, we haven't met the Oncologist yet, just the surgeon. Your Mum's story is so inspirational, I pop by and reread to lift our spirits. Really hoping Friday gives us that starting date.

  • Got you . I thought it was the oncologist you were meeting . In a stage 4 setting your oncologist becomes a bit of a permanent feature where the surgeons move in and out your care more depending on where the operations are . As long as their hand eye coordination is good !! You will meet the oncology team soon and the rest will fall into place quite quickly.

So glad you are drawing strength from what can be achieved. That’s exactly what I did and the people I focused on are still alive and a few years ahead of my mum . Her liver surgeons first liver resection patient was still alive twenty years later .

Hope Friday brings good news .
