Hi
have been recently diagnosed with S4 bowel cancer and am just about to have 5th of 12 chemo sessions. I’ve been quite well in the main but the last week especially I’ve been very low in mood and cannot raise myself at all. I’m not sure if this is just a reaction to everything that was very quick or a side effect of the chemo but I’d like to know if there’s anything I should be doing to try to help myself. Any advice greatly received
Hello Helen I’m new to the group, just waiting biopsy results. Well done on getting through your 5th chemotherapy. I don’t know if your feeling down is part of the treatment but I’m sure it’s a reaction to what you are going through. It’s very hard to be positive all the time. Give yourself some time out, get a cup of coffee and talk to a friend or family member, tell them how you are feeling. Hope you start to feel better soon.
Hi So glad you reach out to us but sorry for the delay . The down side of a forum . Please remember we have a helpline who would be more than happy to chat through this with you . It’s there for days just like this and sometimes it’s nice to speak to someone in person . I will pop the number up just in case it’s of help to you . 0808 808 0000.
You are nearly half way there and have done extremely well . Your GP is also part of your treatment team and don’t be afraid to chat through issues like this with them too. They might just be able to separate out the issues and give you a bit more support .
We are also here to listen and remind you that we care . Watching my mum go through treatment for two years I think the middle ground is tough but soon you will be counting those treatments down and getting to the end of this cycle and a well needed rest . That really gives your body time to recover .
How have you been finding treatment?
Also your amazing doing all this and navigating a pandemic at the same time with the usual supports reduced .
Take care ,
Court

Hi Helen, Sorry you are feeling like this right now, but it's a very normal reaction to what you have been going through. The diagnosis will have been a terrible shock, plus the speed of putting a treatment plan in motion....& to suddenly be on Chemo. It's a strange & very fast procedure...& sometimes, your brain can't keep up with all -it's a totally new language to deal with! Re. Chemo, I recently had 6 cycles of Chemo. Tabs alone...& felt fine throughout. However, just before starting the 7th....I felt depressed, had very bad skin reactions to my feet & hands, sore lips & under nose, plus eyes streaming. Chemo. is very accumulative & takes its' toll over a period of time. Write down/ mention all your reactions to it with your Oncologist. If necessary, they will reduce dosage, or even curtail it for a while.....
&, you will never feel so alone here...this is an amazing site to get so much advice & help from so many others who have/ are experiencing cancer right now. There will always be someone who understands & can offer help.
I wish you all the best.
Hi Helen 777 I found the Macmillan nurses amazing. They are so caring and helpful. Hope you. Start feeling better soon
@Court, @Marieanne26
thank you for your replies. I have spoken to the helpline number you provided and it is possible/probable that the steroids are causing the issue so hopefully that can be addressed when I speak to the team after bloods. I felt so low today and really appreciate the assistance given here, feeling a lot better now and hopeful that the steroids can be changed. I did have to go from 3 days full dose to 6 days half doze as after first cycle I had a horrendously bad crash day, although it was just one day. Looks like I’m not tolerating the dexi very well as I have blurred vision, anxiety, low mood and a round face which I know now are side effects of this steroid. Thanks again for advice
So glad you phoned . That makes sense and gives your clinical team an opportunity to chat it through and guide you .
Hope they are able to help you .
You are doing very well . My mum could only manage 6 in a row .
take care ,
