Hi All,

I was just wondering how they test you to determine if you are clear of cancer, on 3rd September i had anterior resection of sigmoid to remove tumour, today just started taking the chemo tablets Capecitabine, got to thinking after taking the prescribed dose for 3 months how do they know it it has worked ?

  • Hi there. You will have a CT scan. This shows up any cancer cells, due the dye they inject into you during the procedure.

after 1 year - you have another colonoscopy and another CT scan.

I believe you have CT scans for the first 3 years - not sure what happens then.

    Hi Technical guru

PROBO is right but you also have blood tests.

Sometimes your oncologist/surgeon may decide to carry out scans up to five years, But if you have any symptoms or worries at any time after treatment it is best to speak to your GP or your Cancer Specialist Nurse.

  • Thanks both, i wasn't sure if the scans would pick up cancer cells in the lymph nodes or not but i guess a blood test will also help, will have to wait till the new year,
