Hello all,

My fiancé who is 36 was diagnosed a little under 7 weeks ago with stage 3 bowel cancer in the splenic flexure. He had open surgery 2 weeks ago today (7th September) where they did an extended right hemicolectomy with end to end anastomoses

Before he was discharged last Monday he was having good bowel movements but from Wednesday last week onwards he has had horrible constipation. He was taking movicol before the surgery as he was on a low residue diet and because he was taking tramodol.
The surgeon doesn’t want him to have any laxatives but he is very uncomfortable and apart from fibre, more water etc he’s got glycerol suppositories which 111 suggested at the weekend.

Is there anything anyone can recommend or anything please? he’s trying to now cut out the tramadol because it’s causing the constipation but without movicol or senna etc this seems impossible. I hate seeing him so uncomfortable!

Many thanks in advance

  • Hi

I have used Tramadol myself and it certainly has that effect .

Over the years a few ideas have floated around forms . One is brown rice . Something to do with the way the husk breaks down aids constipation. The other one is chewing gum stimulates the digestive juices .

Can’t guarantee anything but maybe worth a try .

    take care ,

    Hi @Court,

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Things improved slightly this morning after not taking any tramadol at all yesterday (although he had horrible night sweats last night and painful forearms last night in bed too)
He did have a poo this morning, although he used the word ‘Boulder’ type for them but hopefully now tramadol has stopped the constipation has hopefully eased.
