My 34 year old son has recently been diagnosed with colon cancer which has spread to liver. He had a colonoscopy which was extremely painful for him as they could not offer sedation as they said his blood pressure was too low. They took 14 biopsy samples but have now said the lab have found them insufficient to determine all the results they need to decide the content of his chemotherapy. They want to gather more biopsies via flexible sigmoidoscopy. My son is terrified of being refused any sedation again - and no one seems to be able to offer any reassurances. Is it a common occurrence to have to repeat biopsy sampling due to insufficiency of the first sample ? Any ideas about trying to overcome my son’s anxiety and fears about this further test as no one seems able to give any assurances in advance about sedation/ pain relief.
Thanks
Hi
Welcome to the forum . That sounds painful indeed but I can totally understand his concern about enduring that again .
It is very important to get good biopsy samples to allow them to streamline the chemo combinations . It would be very reasonable to contact the secretary and advise of the considerable pain he endured and ask them to look into some form of pain relief for the procedure . Explain his reluctance and see what they can do to help him . You could also contact our helpline staff 0808 808 0000 and see if they could help make some suggestions to resolve this situation .
My mum had a spread to her liver 11 years ago now and learning to advocate for your care really is essential. May I wish him every success with his treatment going forward .
take care ,
