I had lower rectal bowel cancer last year. It was was operated on successfully removed including a margin and some lymph node. I had chemotherapy which finished less than a year ago. Now after getting my fitness back it has been discovered by a routine scan that the cancer has spread to my lymph nodes in my pelvis. The lymph node is attached to a muscle for added complication. I have been offered surgery which will involve a large incision and probable damage to the leg afterwards. I also have been offered Sabr Radiotherapy. Please does anyone have advice on Sabr and possible other treatments?

  • Hi ,

Sorry to hear you require further intervention. Just wondered if you have read the above document. I think because it’s not available in a lot of hospitals not so many people have the access to it . But great that you do .

I take it although the surgical option is available it’s the leg function afterwards that is of concern ? If the Sabr is so specific would it preserve your leg function ? The other thing that came to mind was is their a surgical option after the Sabr?

If you click on my user name you will see we have navigated a few tricky bumps along the way with my mum . What I would say your situation is clinically in the area of a specialist. Have you thought about running it by a second opinion to get their judgement or leaning . What we found hard was making decisions that were complicated with limited information . Listening to another specialist actually really helped firm up my mum’s mind on what was the best way forward for her . We were even able to ask what her plan B would be if A was not fully achieved. That gave us the direction we needed going forward . If you do decide to do that the surgeon could refer you quickly. They totally understand it’s not easy and they are actually best placed to know who the other leading surgeons in the field are or what the research is showing .

Thank you, your help is very much appreciated!

Yes, I'm worried about losing my leg function after the surgery. I love running and I've been told that surgery would prevent this. Sabr would only numb the leg temporarily, apparently but I'm yet to talk to a Sabr doctor. They have accepted me for treatment. Its not local, so will have to travel. Surgery may be an option after Sabr.

I'm very scared, this is dominating my thoughts day and night. It was only last year I had my bowel surgery, ostomy and reversal. I was really starting to enjoy my life again.

I think I will seek a second opinion on the surgery.

  • I really feel for you . To come through so much and getting some quality back it is very disappointing indeed to have to face it again . However I can only assure you that despite the bumps my mum hit along the way the good times and normal living did eventually come .

Great you enjoy running and I can totally understand you wanting to investigate this fully .

Sounds as though you do have some more questions to work through with your team . However two good options on the table and that’s a positive clinically .

    Take special care ,
