Hi everyone my name is Torina and my husband has recently been diagnosed with bowel cancer and underwent his surgery on the 4th August 2020 this is a new type of cancer for us since it was nearly 20 years ago he had hodgkins undergoing an autologus transplant at the QE eventually, everything about this cancer is a rollercoaster at the moment he is still in hospital after having a few bad times and also having to undergo a second surgery, he now has a stoma and I am anxious that I learn everything I can to suport this wonderful man and I used the Whitehouse many years ago the first time round , hopefully we can become part of a bigger group that can help lift spirits and calm our fears so good morning to you all
I hope your doing ok, I understand how you must be feeling right now but you have come to the right place, throughout all my husbands continuing treatments, I have found such kind, supportive people on here, who have helped me and are still helping me.
My husband had a permanent stoma in October 2019 and after recovering from the surgery has continued to walk miles, play golf and swim. I initially helped him but he soon got the hang of it. He now irrigates, which gives him much more freedom but I’m sure your stoma nurse can provide further information. The Bodach who is a Macmillan champion was so helpful with advice as were so many others, I’m sure one will be along soon.
In the meantime, I know it’s hard with cancer not to be anxious, so here’s a big hug I hope it helps.......Budge
Thank you Budge those kind words gave me a ray of sunshine will be interested to learn more about irrigation so that will be something I will ask the stoma nurse about you have a very good day
Hi I recall the stoma nurse asked the surgeon if he was suitable for it, but basically it’s putting water through the stoma into the bowel, which in turn makes the bowel react and poop exit, so after time it can give more freedom. Before chemo he would do it ever 48 hours, he felt it took away any worries about leaks etc, he felt more confident.
My husband is presently on chemo and the acidic output and diarrhoea has interrupted his routine, and so, I spend more time looking for solutions to his sore skin.
Good luck with it all Budge
