Hi there
This is my first ever post, my mom has recently had a large tumour removed from her large intestine. The surgery took a large part from the large and small intestine. She’s now struggling with constant diarrhea is this normal with this type of surgery?
She was diagnosed has stage 4 with cancer showing in 7 lymph nodes and has had a ct scan on Monday to check if it’s in the Liver or lungs.
also, it’s took over 12 months for the blockage to be finally diagnosed as cancerous, so we are considering paying privately for her oncology treatment. We are in the West Midlands area could anyone tell me their experience?
thank you all for your time
Hi .
Welcome to the forum . Glad your mum is safely through surgery . Are her lymph nodes near the tumour or distant from her primary tumour ? All the very best with her other scans and hope they bring some good news .
The bowel can take a while to settle after surgery . When did she have her surgery ? However she can get help to manage it so I would get back onto her team or the GP . Does she have a specialist nurse you could phone ? Or you could chat with our helpline staff 0808 808 0000. They could perhaps get additional information for you .
I can understand your concern regarding her care and thinking of going privately. However I might wait to meet her team and assess it from there . Standard chemotherapy follows a protocol which is pretty universal and I was impressed with the care my mum has received through her oncologist. You might want to explore it a bit first . My friend has used a private oncologist and the benefit for her in a stage 4 setting was access to additional agents and probably one I remain quite in awe of was her scan results were within 24 hours . She did get a lot of good communication with them . Now she has the same oncologist under the NHS as her funding ran out and she is finding it doable . Waiting a little longer for scan results . Missing her dedicated nurse but on the whole not too bad .
I am sorry your mum had such a difficult time getting assessed. It really does affect your trust of the system but some individual specialists are really good . But it’s entirely up to you as a family and I understand you want to ensure no further mistakes are made .
Hope all goes smoothly with her scans .
take care ,
Court
