As a result of bowel cancer I now have a stoma since November. I am due to go on Holiday abroad in two weeks time for a family wedding. I have read that the pouches can expand and leak when flying, is this correct.
I am staying in a villa with family, will I be able to use the swimming pool, is there a risk that the pouches could leak
If all the above is possible, are there any precautions I can take
Any advice welcome
thanks you
Hi bposotive
Sounds lovely . I can’t answer your question but I am going to try and tag in a couple of longer term posters to see if they are around and appropriate experience.
Eclaire55 and loobylou2207 . Unfortunately the tag is playing up so I will ask admin for some help .
We will get there ,

Hi bposotive,
I haven't been abroad or on a flight so can't really answer your questions. But... what I would say is this... there a loads of folks who do go abroad and on flights and they have stomas. As long as you prepare for it, you will be fine. Check with your stoma nurses about the type of pouch you have to make sure that you can go swimming with it. You should also try your own local swimming pool and see how you get on in water. Although, I'm not sure with Covid19 if the local pools would be open though. Just remember to take extra supplies and pouches with you, and I've heard folks say to take those in your hand luggage.
Hope this helps a wee bit.
Good luck, and enjoy yourself.. you deserve it!
Linda :-)
Thanks . I also noticed this helpful document .
I also totally forgot my son’s friend has a stoma , swims , jumps off harbour walls and goes abroad often . I will send his mum a message to ask a bit about it. It certainly does not stop him .
Take care ,

His mum got back to me .
Hope I remember it all . He frequently flies and does not give it a second thought now . He normally uses a closed bag but for flying he uses an open bag to allow him to empty it and stop it getting too full . He can also let out any gas too ! Avoids any fizzy drinks in the airport etc .
For swimming he uses filters and sometimes wears an abdominal support too !
She also includes a video of him taking part in pool activities having a ball .
Hope you have a great time ,
