I have not yet been informed by St. Thomas's what preparation are necessary before the operation - emptying bowels, eating before op etc.

Can anyone help since I am operated in one week but am not able to get further info from the hospital at the moment.

  • Hi Chris.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis...but it's good that you are having your operation so speedily.

You will no doubt be receiving all the information you need from your hospital very soon through the post...which will include, letter & full explanatory leaflet all about the Op. itself & what you will need to do beforehand. It will also include the bowel preparatory mixture you will need to take, & instructions on how to do this/ plus dietary requirements.

    Best wishes to you

    Marianne

  • Hi ,

Sorry to hear that and I am sure others most certainly will know the answer and pop on . You also might like to try our helpline 0808 808 0000.

I am sure you will get a helpful reply soon , if not I will tag a few people in and the email will alert them .

All the best with your surgery . My mum was right side ascending and it went smoothly , the bowel took a few days to waken back up and do it’s job and it’s been back to normal for years now with no further issues With it .

    Take care,

    Court

    Hi Chris 993

I assume you are talking about the bowel prep you take before you have a colonoscopy.  I always received mine in the post a week or so before the procedure.

When I went in to have my surgery to have the tumour removed from my colon I thought I might have to have prep but I didn't.

I would suggest that the best person to ask is your Cancer Specialist Nurse or Key Worker, you should have been introduced to them or been given their contact number.  If not get in touch with your consultant's secretary and she will be able to give you the Specialist Nurse/key Workers number or ask the consultant and get back to you.

If you are going in for surgery, your admission letter should give you details on diet etc.

I hope all goes well next week.

    Take care,

    VickiLynne

I have had the colonoscopy and that's why I thought the tumour removal next week would need a similar preparation.

I will follow your advice for a Cancer Specialist Nurse since I left a few messages with St. Thomas contacts to no avail.

Hopefully, the letter will arrive soon.

thank you for your helpful comments,

    Christiane

Thank you so much Court. This is so encouraging to hear. Do you know if your mum had chemo afterwards or was it not necessary?

    Love,

    Christiane

Thank you Marianne. Hope it will arrive soon! Just to put my mind at rest and be able to prepare.

  • Hi Chris,

I had a similar operation to the one you are having. Mine was in June 2018.Like you I didn't know what to expect but this group and it's members helped me so much. If it helps you can read my story in my profile as i sort of kept a diary of events.

This is the worse time for you as it's the worrying time. Break each day into small steps and once you go into hospital things happen very quickly and you will be sorted before you know it.You will be in good safe hands.

If I can help in any way please message me or ask any question on here

    Best Wishes for next week
