    Hi nan-nan

I'm glad to hear that you are doing well after your surgery.

I don't have experience of this but I would suggest you give your stoma nurse a call.

I hope it settles down soon.

Take care and have a good weekend.

  • Hi . Yes this is completely normal and you’re doing the right thing to sit there until you feel like you’ve been. It’s also normal to pass some small amounts of poo or bits of mucus - I’ve attached a link to a previous post that Ian aka the Bodach replied to.

Hope everything else is going ok

    Take care

    Hi Nan Nan

i think we’re going through the same things. I asked my stoma nurse the same question and she explained that the lining of the whole bowel continuously produces a substance called mucus which acts as a lubricant to assist the passage of fecal matter. In a person who has a normally functioning bowel, mucus is not usually noticeable as it mixes with the motion and passes directly into the toilet. However after the procedure the bottom becomes redundant as it is no longer in use. However, the lining of the bowel wall continues to secrete mucus, which can cause problems as it no longer has a useful purpose. Mucus can build up and either leak out or dry up into a ball and cause pain. The amount of mucus discharge varies from person to person. So too does the frequency, ranging from every few weeks or even months to constant problem several times a day.

hope that helps and you can sort it out. I am still trying to get used to the idea that I still need to sit on the toilet like I need to go.

  • Hi nan nan,

I had Apr surgery with perm stoma that was August 2018, I still sometimes feel like I want to poo normally and the sensation, I call it my phantom bowel, I just learned to go with it and it soon passes.

Weird feeling thou I must admit

    Hope you are keeping well
