Hi everyone, hope you are all doing ok

I finally had my colonoscopy last week (28th April) to remove the polyps my Surgeon wanted sorted before my surgery. Ironically the day of my colonoscopy procedure was the date my surgery was planned for before the Corona Virus threw a spanner in the works, anyway I had the procedure (without sedation or gas and air) and instead of the 3 polyps they found in a previous colonoscopy they ended up removing 6 of them, all of which the consultant who did my procedure was confident were non cancerous.

The first day or two after the procedure I was fine, but over the last couple of days i’ve noticed runnier sthools with a fair bit of blood, is this normal after such a procedure? I was told to expect some bleeding but they did’nt exactly say how much to expect.

    Hi Mark

I am sorry to read that you are experiencing some bleeding after your colonoscopy.

This can occur especially after the removal of polyps. Usually the doctors take great care to ensure there is no sign of bleeding after a polyp is removed, bleeding can the contraction of the bowel after colonoscopy (when getting rid of wind or when the bowels are next opened) can cause the area where the polyp was to bleed.

Normally you would should expect a little bleeding, such as ‘spotting’ on the toilet paper or small drops in the toilet bowl. This usually subsides quickly. However if the fair amount bleeding you are experiencing begins to increase and large clots of blood are seen and /or you begin to feel unwell or faint, you  contact your doctor immediately or telephone NHS111 but hopefully everything will be okay today.
