Hi all

Hope everyone is keeping safe.

I was informed by my oncologist last week I need operation to remove my polyp by taking part of the bowel out.

This cannot be repaired as it is too ricky. I will therefore need a stoma. So now have to read up on that.

    Hi Mo,

I am new on here also, I have just had a temporary ileostomy following surgery to remove a large tumour and part of my bowel. on 1st April. I have joined the ileostomy group on here and I understand there is a gentleman who is a great help regarding stomas. I cannot recall his name but I am sure someone will pop up and help us!

I am going to get in touch with him as i have a few questions, my stoma team at the hospital are fantastic but i think I would rather chat to someone who has been through the same things and get 1st hand advice.

I have had a lot of help from others when I asked for chemo advice.

I thought having a bag would be a bigger problem than it actually is, there seems to be a very good system in place where supplies are delivered to your home.

So far managing food ok, eating most things apart from fruit and veg which i really miss, i did try some well wilted spinach and a few soft carrots on Sunday which were ok but did make things a very interesting colour!  I have even had a couple of small glasses of wine!

Hope you find the information you need.

    Take care xxx

    Hi Phoebe

Thanks for your reply, my new nurse phoned me yesterday and told me a lot, she is sending me out an information pack.

I did have my oncologist nurses but now changed.

one thing I didn’t realise was about food. Can you only eat certain food. I love my frui. I do watch what I eat normally,

Fortunately I like spinach. I love my veg as well. Think I had maybe look more into it.

Cant have surgery until coronavirus lifted.

    Where about do you live?

    Take care

    Hi,

You have to be careful with fruit and veg, I think the skins can cause a blockage in the stoma, also things like nuts, seeds and granary bread. I had a small portion of salad and it caused a few issues! I have a list of stuff to avoid in the first weeks but I am gradually introducing different things. A food diary is a good idea. I don't think any food is banned but some things not straight away.

I live in Leamington Spa, my operation went ahead despite corona virus as I was in danger of a blockage. I think otherwise it would have been postponed until later.

Hope your op can go ahead soon.

    Take care xxx

    Thanks for reply.

I have a polyp in the small bowel which they tried to remove with sigmoidoscopy but couldn’t hence the surgery.

Not sure I want to go into hospital as will be in 5here about 5 days. Don’t fancy not being able to have visitors.

Guess I will get the do’s and don’ts in my pack and when I get the surgery.

Sure going to take some getting used to.
