Secondary cancer in Rectal Gland and bones, plus large inflamed lymph nodes behind stomach.

Good morning , i need to know if anyone out there has any help to offer for my brother.

Nov 2018 my brother had Bowl cancer and 1/2 of his colon removed. He has a stoma bag. His cancer had metastasised to his Liver. After 6 months of chemo he had 3/4 of his Liver removed in Nov 2019. He progressed really well and in Jan 2020 had a scan which said he was cancer free.

Late Feb my brother felt something different in his body and complained of swollen lymph nodes in his groin and neck and severe pain. He had a CT scan in March which showed cancerous enlarged lymph nodes behind the stomach and by his Kidney. He was told he would need more chemo - which was supposed to start yesterday (Wed 22nd April)

His pain was so acute he could not lie down and when he did sleep - he did it in a chair. By this stage he was on Oral Morphine for the pain. In April he started to vomit and loose a lot of weight. Pain probably due to the lymph nodes pressing on his stomach.

Last Saturday he was admitted to hospital, where they have been hydrating him through a canala.
They also admit pain relief through the canala.

He had another CT scan yesterday which showed enlarged inflamed lymph nodes behind the stomach, and cancer spots on the Renal Gland and on some bones.
The MDT are meeting next Tuesday to discuss his case.

He is currently too weak to have chemo, as he needs to gain his strength. He is a very fit individual @ 60 years of age. He is a fighter.

Does anyone heard of this before - any help or guidance would be welcome.

Many thanks

Paula

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your brother . My mum had a different spread . You can read her story by clicking on my user name . She had a lot of issues with hydration and it’s amazing how quickly it can knock them off . Electrolytes the lot . However despite an emergency admission to hospital being very scary indeed it was a turning point . They got everything balanced again for her to start treatment . There are many different routes and some may vary of bone involvement but the MDT will review and guide him to see if there are Radiotherapy options etc . My mum used chemo to get on top of a spread . It really helped and opened up other avenues .
He sounds strong so taking the time to get him stable again and allow treatment to recommence is a good plan . I was always afraid it was going to be withdrawn but I can assure you they worked very hard to get her back functioning again .

    Take care ,

  • Update on my brothers situation:

He is in hospital - cancer has reappeared causing blockage of kidney, enflamed lymph nodes behind the stomach and groin area plus spots on some of his bones. This has led to his system closing down one organ at a time. He is in no pain now which as a family we are thankful for.

This is a big shock for all of us , because he was given the all clear in Jan 2020. There was one rogue cancer Lymph node which the surgeon could not find when performing the liver operation in Nov 2019. We prayed this lymph node had been ‘killed’ during his chemo , but it has struck him again in a very aggressive manner.

He has at most a few days to live. Cancer beat my brother in the end - but i am very privileged to know him as my brother because he was a true Braveheart - never complained , just endured the fight of his life.

He gave cancer a good fight - and for one rogue lymph node he would be alive and looking forward to his life ahead.

Good luck to all cancer fighters out there.

    Many thanks for listening

  •       Hi Paula,

So very sorry to hear of your Brother nearing the end of his fight with this God awful ailment. He has been blessed to have someone such as yourself in his corner. I only hope and pray I can be half as strong as your Brother is and has been. I feel bad  I never had the opportunity to meet him-we’re the same age and similar situations.

Please give me the strength to change what I can, accept what I can't change and the wisdom to know the difference.

    Love and Respect Tony

  • Hi Paula ,

I am so sorry to hear that . I can totally understand how much of a shock that has been considering his recent clear scan .

He has endured so well and I am glad he is now pain free . It’s such a difficult time for you both and I send all my love to you . I hope he remains peaceful .

We are here for you too as you support him on this stage of his journey. You clearly love him very much and goodbyes are very hard indeed .

Much love to you both ,
